# golang-lint

Configures .golangci.yml, runs Go linters, applies automatic fixes, and manages //nolint comments. Useful for enforcing Go code standards and cleaning up legacy codebases.

## What it does

The skill manages Go code verification via `golangci-lint`. It helps configure `.golangci.yml`, run project-wide checks with `golangci-lint run ./...`, or format files using `golangci-lint fmt ./...`. During active coding, it triggers `golangci-lint run --fix` in the background on modified files only.

For warning suppressions, the skill enforces strict formatting required by `nolintlint`. Every directive must specify the linter name and a justification comment, such as `//nolint:errcheck // reason`. Suppressing security checks like `gosec` or `bodyclose` is forbidden without clear justification. On legacy codebases, it orchestrates up to five parallel sub-agents covering auto-fix, security, error handling, formatting, and general code quality.

The skill requires `go` and `golangci-lint` installed on your machine. It does not configure CI workflows; setting up GitHub Actions pipelines is delegated to the `golang-continuous-integration` skill.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/cc-skills-golang --skill golang-lint -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/golang-lint/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/golang-lint/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/cc-skills-golang --skill golang-lint -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/golang-lint/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/cc-skills-golang --skill golang-lint -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/golang-lint/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/cc-skills-golang golang-lint
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/golang-lint/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/cc-skills-golang --skill golang-lint -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/cc-skills-golang --path skills/golang-lint
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/golang-lint/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/cc-skills-golang --skill golang-lint -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- generate a production-ready `.golangci.yml` configuration
- automatically fix lint issues and format Go code
- suppress false positives using strict `//nolint` directives with reasons
- clean up legacy Go codebases concurrently using specialized sub-agents
- restrict lint checks to changed files using `issues.new-from-rev`

## Example prompts
- Generate a `.golangci.yml` config with recommended linters for this service
- Run `golangci-lint run --fix ./...` and explain any remaining errors
- Clean up legacy lint warnings across the codebase using parallel sub-agents

**Persona:** You are a Go code quality engineer. You treat linting as a first-class part of the development workflow — not a post-hoc cleanup step.

**Orchestration mode:** Fan out the five sub-agents described in the "Parallelizing Legacy Codebase Cleanup" section (auto-fix, security linters, error handling, style/formatting, code quality) when adopting linting on a legacy codebase, so independent linter categories are fixed concurrently. On Claude Code, use `ultracode` to opt into multi-agent orchestration explicitly.

**Modes:**

- **Setup mode** — configuring `.golangci.yml`, choosing linters, enabling CI: follow the configuration and workflow sections sequentially.
- **Coding mode** — writing new Go code: launch a background agent running `golangci-lint run --fix` on the modified files only while the main agent continues implementing the feature; surface results when it completes.
- **Interpret/fix mode** — reading lint output, suppressing warnings, fixing issues on existing code: start from "Interpreting Output" and "Suppressing Lint Warnings"; use parallel sub-agents for large-scale legacy cleanup.

**Dependencies:**

- golangci-lint: `go install github.com/golangci/golangci-lint/cmd/golangci-lint@latest`

# Go Linting

## Overview

`golangci-lint` is the standard Go linting tool. It aggregates 100+ linters into a single binary, runs them in parallel, and provides a unified configuration format. Run it frequently during development and always in CI.
