# golang-how-to

The skill picks the Go skills a task needs and loads them together. Useful when you write a service, chase a panic, or set up a project.

## What it does

A Go task rarely fits one skill. `golang-how-to` reads the context and loads a primary skill alongside secondary ones: building a gRPC service pulls in `golang-grpc`, `golang-testing` and `golang-error-handling`; debugging a panic pulls in `golang-troubleshooting` and `golang-safety`; auditing security pulls in `golang-security`, `golang-lint` and `golang-safety`.

It also settles overlap. When two skills look alike, the orchestrator shows a boundary table: performance vs benchmark vs troubleshooting, `samber/lo` vs `mo` vs `ro`, the dependency injection cluster, safety vs security. A separate `/golang-how-to configure` mode writes the always-load directive into your agent config — `CLAUDE.md`, `AGENTS.md`, `GEMINI.md`, Cursor rules or Copilot instructions.

Code navigation needs `gopls`: `go install golang.org/x/tools/gopls@latest`. Claude's built-in `LSP` tool also wants `ENABLE_LSP_TOOL=1` and a wired Go language server. Without `gopls` you get no go-to-definition or find-references. In configure mode the skill asks questions through the environment's question tool, one at a time.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/cc-skills-golang --skill golang-how-to -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/golang-how-to/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/golang-how-to/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/cc-skills-golang --skill golang-how-to -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/golang-how-to/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/cc-skills-golang --skill golang-how-to -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/golang-how-to/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/cc-skills-golang golang-how-to
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/golang-how-to/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/cc-skills-golang --skill golang-how-to -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/cc-skills-golang --path skills/golang-how-to
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/golang-how-to/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/cc-skills-golang --skill golang-how-to -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/samber/cc-skills-golang/tree/HEAD/skills/golang-how-to/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- match Go skills to a task and load them together
- tell two overlapping skills apart
- find out why a goroutine panics
- pin Go skills to always load in a project config
- wire up code navigation through gopls

## Example prompts
- Write a gRPC service for orders and cover it with tests
- Figure out why this code panics
- Set up the project so the Go skills always load

Reads the task context and loads the most relevant skills from samber/cc-skills-golang, often multiple at once: writing a gRPC service loads golang-grpc + golang-testing + golang-error-handling; debugging a panic loads golang-troubleshooting + golang-safety; auditing security loads golang-security + golang-lint + golang-safety. **Persona:** You are a Go skills orchestrator. For every Go task, identify all relevant skills and load them together — a task rarely belongs to a single skill.

**Modes:**

- **Orchestrate** — for any Go coding, review, debug, or setup task, load the primary skill plus all applicable secondary skills simultaneously.
- **Disambiguate** — when two skills seem to overlap, show the boundary table. See [disambiguation.md](references/disambiguation.md).
- **Configure** — write the always-load directive for `golang-how-to` itself, plus an optional `## Required Go skills` block, to the project's agent-config file (CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, or equivalent). Follow [project-config.md](references/project-config.md).

**Questions:** In Configure mode, ask the user through the environment's question tool — never as plain-text prose. One question at a time, wait for the answer. If the environment has no question tool, ask in prose with the same options.

**Dependencies:** `gopls` — `go install golang.org/x/tools/gopls@latest`; Claude Code's built-in `LSP` tool also needs `ENABLE_LSP_TOOL=1` and a Go language server wired (see [Code navigation with gopls](#code-navigation-with-gopls)).

## Skill loading

For each task, load the **primary skill** and all applicable **secondary skills** at the same time. Do not wait — load them together at the start.
