## What it does

The skill covers three layers of SQL work in Go: the standard `database/sql`, `sqlx` with its convenience methods, and `pgx` for PostgreSQL. A decision tree picks the library for you — non-PostgreSQL databases get `database/sql` plus `sqlx`, while PostgreSQL under load points to `pgx`. Code samples follow: connection pool settings, single-row and multi-row queries, named parameters.

Then come the repository pattern, context-aware transactions, and schema versioning with `golang-migrate`. You never invoke this skill yourself. Its frontmatter sets `user-invocable: false` and `disable-model-invocation: true`, so the agent loads it on its own when a task touches the data access layer. It declares no required tools.

The useful part is the small stuff people get wrong: `defer rows.Close()`, checking `rows.Err()` after iterating, handling `sql.ErrNoRows` instead of returning an empty struct. If you write Go without an ORM, this is worth a look against your own code.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill golang-database-patterns -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/golang-database-patterns/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/golang-database-patterns/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill golang-database-patterns -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/golang-database-patterns/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill golang-database-patterns -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/golang-database-patterns/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills golang-database-patterns
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/golang-database-patterns/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill golang-database-patterns -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/golang/golang-database-patterns
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/golang-database-patterns/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill golang-database-patterns -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- pick between database/sql, sqlx and pgx for a given database
- set up a production connection pool
- build a data access layer with repositories
- version a schema with golang-migrate
- wrap queries in context-aware transactions

## Example prompts
- set up a PostgreSQL connection pool with pgx
- rewrite this query using sqlx named parameters
- how should I handle sql.ErrNoRows in Go

# Go Database Patterns

## Overview

Go's database ecosystem provides multiple layers of abstraction for SQL database integration. From the standard library's `database/sql` to enhanced libraries like `sqlx` and PostgreSQL-optimized `pgx`, developers can choose the right tool for their performance and ergonomics needs.

**Key Features:**
- 🔌 **database/sql**: Standard interface for any SQL database
- 🚀 **sqlx**: Convenience methods with struct scanning and named queries
- 🐘 **pgx**: PostgreSQL-native driver with maximum performance
- 📦 **Repository Pattern**: Interface-based data access for testability
- 🔄 **Migrations**: Schema versioning with golang-migrate
- ⚡ **Connection Pooling**: Production-ready connection management
- 🔒 **Transaction Safety**: Context-aware transaction handling

## When to Use This Skill

Activate this skill when:
- Building CRUD operations with type safety
- Implementing data access layers for web services
- Managing database schema evolution across environments
- Optimizing database connection pooling for production
- Testing database code with mock repositories
- Handling concurrent database access patterns
- Migrating from ORMs to SQL-first approaches
- Integrating PostgreSQL-specific features (COPY, LISTEN/NOTIFY)
