## What it does

This skill is a reference for concurrent Go in production services. It ships working examples: goroutine lifetimes stopped through `context`, fan-out and fan-in with `errgroup.WithContext`, bounded parallelism via a semaphore, a worker pool with a fixed worker count, pipeline stages, and periodic work on `time.NewTicker` instead of `time.After` inside a loop.

There are decision trees too. Channel or `sync.RWMutex` or `atomic` for shared state. `errgroup` against `sync.WaitGroup`. Buffered channel against unbuffered. Each pattern comes with a wrong version next to it — a goroutine with no stop condition, a channel closed by the receiver, a `WaitGroup` that swallows the first error.

The skill is not user-invocable and does not invoke the model on its own, so it loads as background material while the agent writes concurrent code. Run your tests with `-race` and timeouts anyway. The examples show correct shapes, but they will not catch a race in your own logic.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill golang-concurrency-patterns -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/golang-concurrency-patterns/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/golang-concurrency-patterns/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill golang-concurrency-patterns -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/golang-concurrency-patterns/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill golang-concurrency-patterns -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/golang-concurrency-patterns/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills golang-concurrency-patterns
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/golang-concurrency-patterns/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill golang-concurrency-patterns -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/golang/golang-concurrency-patterns
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/golang-concurrency-patterns/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill golang-concurrency-patterns -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- write fan-out that cancels sibling tasks on the first error
- cap the number of goroutines so a service does not overload
- build a worker pool with predictable resource use
- track down a goroutine that leaks after a request finishes
- pick between channel, mutex and atomic for shared state

## Example prompts
- rewrite this job loop with errgroup.WithContext and cancel on error
- bound the parallelism in this fan-out to 8 concurrent goroutines
- check my worker pool for goroutine leaks and deadlocks

# Go Concurrency Patterns (Production)

## Overview

Go concurrency scales when goroutine lifetimes are explicit, cancellation is propagated with `context.Context`, and shared state is protected (channels or locks). Apply these patterns to build reliable services and avoid common failure modes: goroutine leaks, deadlocks, and data races.

## Quick Start

**Default building blocks**
- Use `context` to drive cancellation and deadlines.
- Use `errgroup.WithContext` for fan-out/fan-in with early abort.
- Bound concurrency (avoid unbounded goroutines) with a semaphore or worker pool.
- Prefer immutable data; otherwise protect shared state with a mutex or make a single goroutine the owner.

**Avoid**
- Fire-and-forget goroutines in request handlers.
- `time.After` inside hot loops.
- Closing channels from the receiver side.
- Sharing mutable variables across goroutines without synchronization.

## Core Concepts

### Goroutine lifecycle

Treat goroutines as resources with a clear owner and shutdown condition.

✅ **Correct: stop goroutines via context**
```go
ctx, cancel := context.WithCancel(context.Background())
defer cancel()
go func() {
    ticker := time.NewTicker(250 * time.Millisecond)
    defer ticker.Stop()
    for {
        select {
        case <-ctx.Done():
            return
        case <-ticker.C:
            // do work
        }
    }
}()
```
