## What it does

The skill kicks in when you write a multi-command CLI in Go: project generators, admin utilities, deployment scripts. It lays out commands in the `APPNAME VERB NOUN --FLAG` pattern and wires flags into Viper so the precedence between config sources stays predictable.

Inside are code samples: `cmd/root.go` with `PersistentFlags` and `cobra.OnInitialize`, plus a `deploy` command using `Args: cobra.ExactArgs(1)`, `PreRunE` for validation and `RunE` for the actual work. Persistent versus local flags get their own section, along with `MarkFlagRequired`, `MarkFlagsRequiredTogether`, `MarkFlagsMutuallyExclusive` and the execution hooks `PersistentPreRunE`, `PreRunE`, `RunE`, `PostRunE`.

You need `github.com/spf13/cobra` and `github.com/spf13/viper` in your imports. The skill is not invoked by hand: its frontmatter sets `user-invocable: false` and `disable-model-invocation: true`, so the agent picks it up on its own when the task involves a Go CLI. Worth checking that your setup reads skills of this kind at all.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill golang-cli-cobra-viper -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/golang-cli-cobra-viper/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/golang-cli-cobra-viper/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill golang-cli-cobra-viper -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/golang-cli-cobra-viper/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill golang-cli-cobra-viper -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/golang-cli-cobra-viper/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills golang-cli-cobra-viper
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/golang-cli-cobra-viper/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill golang-cli-cobra-viper -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/golang/golang-cli-cobra-viper
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/golang-cli-cobra-viper/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill golang-cli-cobra-viper -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills/tree/HEAD/toolchains/golang/golang-cli-cobra-viper/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- split a CLI into subcommands the way git and kubectl do
- bind Cobra flags to Viper without duplicating values
- set precedence across flags, env vars, config files and defaults
- add shell completion for bash, zsh, fish and PowerShell
- validate command arguments before the main logic runs

## Example prompts
- scaffold the command tree for a new Cobra CLI
- hook up Viper and set the config precedence order
- add bash and zsh completion to my Go utility

# Go CLI Development with Cobra & Viper

## Overview

Cobra and Viper are the industry-standard libraries for building production-quality CLIs in Go. Cobra provides command structure and argument parsing, while Viper manages configuration from multiple sources with clear precedence rules.

**Key Features:**
- 🎯 **Cobra Commands**: POSIX-compliant CLI with subcommands (`app verb noun --flag`)
- ⚙️ **Viper Config**: Unified configuration from flags, env vars, and config files
- 🔄 **Integration**: Seamless Cobra + Viper plumbing patterns
- 🐚 **Shell Completion**: Auto-generated completions for bash, zsh, fish, PowerShell
- ✅ **Production Ready**: Battle-tested by kubectl, docker, gh, hugo

**Used By**: Kubernetes (kubectl), Docker CLI, GitHub CLI (gh), Hugo, Helm, and 100+ major projects

## When to Use This Skill

Activate this skill when:
- Building multi-command CLI tools with subcommands
- Creating developer tools, project generators, or scaffolding utilities
- Implementing admin CLIs for services or infrastructure
- Requiring flexible configuration (flags > env vars > config files > defaults)
- Adding shell completion for frequently-used CLIs
- Building DevOps automation tools or deployment scripts

## Cobra Framework

### Command Structure Pattern

Cobra follows the `APPNAME VERB NOUN --FLAG` pattern popularized by git and kubectl.

```go
// cmd/root.go
package cmd
import (
    "fmt"
    "os"
    "github.com/spf13/cobra"
    "github.com/spf13/viper"
)
var cfgFile string
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 13ec16304e214d96 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
