## What it does

This skill guides coding agents through GDScript conventions in Godot 4.x projects. It enforces static type hints on variables and function returns to catch errors early. Naming conventions mandate PascalCase for classes and snake_case for methods, with private members prefixed by an underscore.

The architecture follows the signal-up, call-down rule. Child nodes emit signals rather than calling parent methods directly. Parents listen to signals and issue method calls down the tree. For node references, the skill favors typed `@onready` variables and `%` scene accessors instead of fragile string paths. It also separates small compile-time `preload` assets from background loading via `ResourceLoader`.

The guidelines target Godot 4.x and GDScript exclusively. Do not use this skill on Godot 3.x projects or C# codebases, because engine APIs and language semantics differ significantly.

## Requirements
- Works with: Godot

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill godot-best-practices -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/godot-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/godot-best-practices/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill godot-best-practices -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/godot-best-practices/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill godot-best-practices -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/godot-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jwynia/agent-skills godot-best-practices
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/godot-best-practices/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill godot-best-practices -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills --path skills/tech/game-development/godot/godot-best-practices
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/godot-best-practices/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill godot-best-practices -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/tech/game-development/godot/godot-best-practices/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- enforce static typing across GDScript variables and function signatures
- decouple parent and child nodes with the signal-up call-down pattern
- replace fragile node paths with typed `@onready` and `%` accessors
- handle background asset loading using `ResourceLoader`

## Example prompts
- Create a Godot 4 GDScript HealthComponent using typed signals
- Show how to load a scene asynchronously with ResourceLoader in Godot 4
- Write a player controller script using @onready and % node references

# Godot 4.x GDScript Best Practices

Guide AI agents in writing high-quality GDScript code for Godot 4.x. This skill provides coding standards, architecture patterns, and templates for game development.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Generating new GDScript code
- Creating or organizing Godot scenes
- Designing game architecture and node hierarchies
- Implementing state machines, object pools, or save systems
- Answering questions about GDScript patterns or Godot conventions
- Reviewing GDScript code for quality issues

Do NOT use this skill when:
- Working with C# in Godot (use C# patterns)
- Working with Godot 3.x (syntax differs significantly)
- Using GDExtension/C++ (different paradigm)
- Working with Godot's visual scripting

## Core Principles

### 1. Naming Conventions

Follow GDScript naming standards consistently:

```gdscript
# Classes: PascalCase
class_name PlayerController
extends CharacterBody2D
# Signals: past_tense_snake_case (describe what happened)
signal health_changed(new_health: int)
signal player_died
signal item_collected(item: Item)
# Constants: SCREAMING_SNAKE_CASE
const MAX_SPEED: float = 200.0
const JUMP_FORCE: int = -400
# Variables and functions: snake_case
var current_health: int = 100
var _private_variable: float = 0.0  # Leading underscore for private
func calculate_damage(base: int, multiplier: float) -> int:
    return int(base * multiplier)
func _private_helper() -> void:  # Leading underscore for private
    pass
```

### 2. Type Hints (Static Typing)

Use explicit type hints everywhere for autocomplete and error detection:

```gdscript
# Variable declarations
var speed: float = 100.0
var player: CharacterBody2D
var items: Array[Item] = []
var stats: Dictionary = {}
# Function signatures with return types
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 7371ff1c25dceaae tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
