# go-testing

A skill that guides the agent through Go test code: table-driven tests, subtests, helpers, and comparisons with cmp.Diff. Handy whenever a test needs writing.

## What it does

The skill gives the agent a set of rules for Go tests. It explains when a table-driven test fits and when separate functions are better: a table works if every case runs the same code path, while complex setup or conditional mocking should push you toward individual test functions. Comparisons of structs, slices, maps and protos go through `cmp.Diff`; assertion libraries are off the table. For protobuf values you add the `protocmp.Transform()` option.

Resources are routed by task. `scripts/gen-table-test.sh` generates a table-driven scaffold, and `assets/table-test-template.go` is a copyable starting point. The `references/` files cover helpers, package layout, choosing between `t.Error` and `t.Fatal`, and integration tests against external services or databases. Helpers must call `t.Helper()` as their first statement and clean up with `t.Cleanup()`.

One rule is easy to get wrong: never call `t.Fatal` from a goroutine other than the test goroutine, or the failure lands in the wrong place. Errors are checked semantically with `errors.Is` rather than by matching message strings. Benchmarks are out of scope here and live in go-performance. After edits the skill suggests running `go test -run TestXxx -v` and fixing compile errors before moving on.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cxuu/golang-skills --skill go-testing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/go-testing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/go-testing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cxuu/golang-skills --skill go-testing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/go-testing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cxuu/golang-skills --skill go-testing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/go-testing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install cxuu/golang-skills go-testing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/go-testing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cxuu/golang-skills --skill go-testing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/cxuu/golang-skills --path skills/go-testing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/go-testing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cxuu/golang-skills --skill go-testing -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- write a test for a Go function when the agent has no starting point
- fold a dozen similar cases into one table-driven test
- compare two structs and get a readable diff instead of hand-checking fields
- move database or file setup into a helper with proper teardown
- assert on an error type rather than its message text

## Example prompts
- write a table-driven test for ParseConfig
- add subtests with names so I can filter them with -run
- compare got and want with cmp.Diff and print the diff in the failure message

> Compatibility: Diff examples may use `github.com/google/go-cmp`.

## Resource Routing

- `scripts/gen-table-test.sh` - Run when generating a table-driven test scaffold.
- `assets/table-test-template.go` - Use as a copyable table-test starting point.
- `references/TABLE-DRIVEN-TESTS.md` - Read when choosing table tests, subtests, or parallel test patterns.
- `references/TEST-HELPERS.md` - Read when writing helpers, fixtures, cleanup, or test doubles.
- `references/TEST-ORGANIZATION.md` - Read when structuring packages, black-box tests, or larger test suites.
- `references/VALIDATION-APIS.md` - Read when choosing `t.Error`, `t.Fatal`, `cmp.Diff`, or assertion style.
- `references/INTEGRATION.md` - Read when testing external services, HTTP handlers, databases, or long-running setup.

## Quick Reference

| Pattern | Use When |
|---------|----------|
| `t.Error` | Default — report failure, keep running |
| `t.Fatal` | Setup failed or continuing is meaningless |
| `cmp.Diff` | Comparing structs, slices, maps, protos |
| Table-driven | Many cases share identical logic |
| Subtests | Need filtering, parallel execution, or naming |
| `t.Helper()` | Any test helper function (call as first statement) |
| `t.Cleanup()` | Teardown in helpers instead of defer |

---

## Useful Test Failures

> **Normative**: Test failures must be diagnosable without reading the test
> source.

Every failure message must include: function name, inputs, actual (got), and
expected (want). Use the format `YourFunc(%v) = %v, want %v`.

```go
// Good:
t.Errorf("Add(2, 3) = %d, want %d", got, 5)
// Bad: Missing function name and inputs
t.Errorf("got %d, want %d", got, 5)
```

Always print got before want: `got %v, want %v` — never reversed.

---

## No Assertion Libraries

> **Normative**: Do not use assertion libraries. Use `cmp.Diff` for complex
> comparisons.

```go
if diff := cmp.Diff(want, got); diff != "" {
    t.Errorf("GetPost() mismatch (-want +got):\n%s", diff)
}
```

For protocol buffers, add `protocmp.Transform()` as a cmp option. Always
