## What it does

The skill enforces a strict verification loop: `go build ./...` and `go test ./...` must pass before any edit. Each transformation runs in isolation, followed by `go vet` and a dedicated Git commit. If coverage is missing, the agent drafts characterization tests to pin down existing behavior.

It covers splitting god packages via type aliases, breaking circular imports using consumer-side interfaces, and renaming symbols with `gopls`. Signature changes rely on deprecation wrappers or `//go:fix inline` pragmas.

Without Git and the Go toolchain installed, the workflow halts because verification cannot run.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --skill go-refactoring -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/go-refactoring/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/go-refactoring/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --skill go-refactoring -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/go-refactoring/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --skill go-refactoring -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/go-refactoring/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills go-refactoring
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/go-refactoring/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --skill go-refactoring -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --path 'skills/(workflow)/go-refactoring'
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/go-refactoring/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --skill go-refactoring -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/(workflow)/go-refactoring/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- split large Go packages without breaking dependent modules
- break circular package imports using consumer interfaces
- rename symbols safely across the workspace with gopls
- run strangler migrations for legacy subsystems

## Example prompts
- Split this god package into smaller packages without changing behavior
- Break the circular dependency between package auth and package user
- Migrate this method signature using a deprecation wrapper

# Go Refactoring Workflow

A refactor changes structure, never behavior. The definition of done is
mechanical: same tests pass before and after every step, and every step
is small enough to revert alone.

Detailed reference material, loaded on demand:

- `references/bulk-rewrites.md` — `gofmt -r`, `//go:fix inline`, `eg`,
  `gopatch` and custom analyzers, with the verification to run after.

Read a reference file only when the summary below is not enough.

## 0. Risk, Checkpoints, and When Not To

| Risk | Transformations | Before you start |
|---|---|---|
| Low | gopls rename, extract/inline variable, organize imports | Green build and tests |
| Medium | Extract function or method, inline a call across packages, add/remove a parameter | Tests that cover every changed call site |
| High | Move types across packages, split or merge packages, break cycles, change exported API | Full safety net, and the developer's sign-off |

Stop for the developer's approval before any cross-package move, exported
API change, deletion, or change to code with no tests. Question the
refactor itself when the code is stable and nothing planned touches it,
when it is critical and untested, or when no concrete next change gets
easier.

## 1. The Loop

1. **Baseline:** `go build ./... && go test ./...` must be green before
   touching anything. If tests are missing around the target code,
   write characterization tests FIRST — they pin current behavior,
   even if that behavior looks wrong.
2. **One transformation** from the catalog below.
3. **Verify:** build + tests + `go vet ./...`.
4. **Commit.** Never mix a refactor commit with a behavior change —
   reviewers can skim a `refactor:` commit; they must scrutinize a
   mixed one.
5. Repeat.

If step 3 fails and the fix isn't obvious in a minute, revert the step
rather than debugging a half-applied transformation.

## 2. Renames — Let Tools Do Them

```bash
# Preferred: gopls (understands types, interfaces, embedding)
gopls rename -w internal/service/user.go:#offset newName
# Module path or package import path changes:
# update go.mod, then rewrite imports mechanically
