## What it does

The skill reviews Go code for costs in hot paths, including excess allocations, map usage, and HTTP client reuse. Its optimization workflow starts with a target metric and a baseline benchmark, then uses profiling to locate the cause. Change one thing at a time and compare results with `benchstat`.

Its guidance covers `pprof`, execution traces, GC, `GOMEMLIMIT`, and PGO; detailed references are loaded when needed. The Go toolchain is required. `benchstat` is optional and helps compare benchmark runs. The skill advises against optimizing without a benchmark that demonstrates the problem. It does not handle concurrency correctness or general style reviews.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --skill go-performance-review -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/go-performance-review/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/go-performance-review/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --skill go-performance-review -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/go-performance-review/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --skill go-performance-review -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/go-performance-review/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills go-performance-review
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/go-performance-review/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --skill go-performance-review -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --path 'skills/(safety)/go-performance-review'
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/go-performance-review/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --skill go-performance-review -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/(safety)/go-performance-review/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find CPU-heavy functions in a Go package
- reduce allocations on a hot path
- compare benchmark runs before and after a change
- trace memory growth with heap profiles
- review GC and GOMEMLIMIT settings

## Example prompts
- Review this Go package's hot paths and find excess allocations.
- Compare the benchmark runs before and after the change with `benchstat`.
- Inspect the CPU profile and identify what to investigate first.

# Go Performance Review

Profile first, optimize second. Never optimize without a benchmark proving the problem.

Detailed reference material, loaded on demand:

- `references/benchmarking.md` — benchmark shape, running, reading
  benchstat, comparing variants, commit format, CI regression checks.
- `references/memory-and-io.md` — allocation, hot-path and map examples,
  retention, struct layout, false sharing, HTTP clients, streaming, batching.
- `references/profiling.md` — which profile for which symptom, capture
  commands, reading pprof, compiler diagnostics, traces, flight recorder.
- `references/runtime-tuning.md` — GOGC/GOMEMLIMIT, reading `gctrace`,
  GOMAXPROCS in containers, PGO.
- `references/logging.md` — slog vs zap/zerolog decision table, slog with a
  zap backend, logging anti-patterns in hot paths.

Read a reference file only when the summary below is not enough.

## Operating Modes

- **Architecture review** (a package or service): look for structural
  costs — no connection reuse, unbounded goroutines, N+1 queries, the wrong
  data structure, per-request work that could be done once. Run separate
  passes for allocation and layout, I/O and concurrency, and algorithms and
  caching; give each to a parallel sub-agent if the environment supports it.
- **Hot-path review** (one function the caller names): read it alongside
  its profile, sequentially.
- **Optimize** (a bottleneck is known): follow the cycle below, one change
  at a time.

## The Optimization Cycle

1. **Name the metric and the target** — p99 latency, throughput,
   `allocs/op`, RSS. Without a target, optimization never ends.
2. **Rule out external time first.** Goroutines parked in
   `net.(*conn).Read` or `database/sql`, or a trace dominated by one
   upstream span, mean the fix is elsewhere (go-database, go-observability).
3. **Benchmark the isolated path** and save the baseline:
   `go test -run '^$' -bench Name -benchmem -count=10 | tee old.txt`.
4. **Profile to find the cause** — see Profiling below.
