# go-naming

A skill that keeps Go names idiomatic: packages, types, functions, constants, receivers. Useful whenever an agent creates new types or exported APIs.

## What it does

The skill kicks in whenever an agent names a Go identifier: a package, type, function, method, variable, constant or receiver. It also triggers when new types, packages or exported APIs are being created, even if nobody asked about naming conventions.

Inside there is `scripts/check-naming.sh` plus reference files: `references/IDENTIFIERS.md` for initialisms and exported identifiers, `references/REPETITION.md` for names that repeat package or receiver context, `references/VARIABLES.md` for local variables and receivers. The script flags SCREAMING_SNAKE_CASE constants, getters with a `Get` prefix, generic package names like `util`, and receivers called `this` or `self`. After a rename the skill suggests running `bash scripts/check-naming.sh` and then `go build ./...` — skip that and a broken build slips through.

Package organization is out of scope; that lives in `go-packages`. Go names run shorter than in other languages, and some rules here are judgement calls: the `-er` suffix for single-method interfaces and dropping `Get` from simple accessors are advisory, while MixedCaps and short receivers are required.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cxuu/golang-skills --skill go-naming -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/go-naming/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/go-naming/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cxuu/golang-skills --skill go-naming -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/go-naming/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cxuu/golang-skills --skill go-naming -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/go-naming/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install cxuu/golang-skills go-naming
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/go-naming/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cxuu/golang-skills --skill go-naming -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/cxuu/golang-skills --path skills/go-naming
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/go-naming/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cxuu/golang-skills --skill go-naming -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/cxuu/golang-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/go-naming/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- turn SCREAMING_SNAKE_CASE constants into MixedCaps
- drop the Get prefix from simple getters
- size a variable name to its scope
- rename a `util` package to something specific
- stop shadowing predeclared identifiers like `error` and `len`

## Example prompts
- Name the new types in the orders package and check them against go-naming
- My constants are SCREAMING_SNAKE_CASE — run go-naming and rename them
- Name the config reader interface following go-naming rules

# Go Naming Conventions

## Resource Routing

- `scripts/check-naming.sh` - Run when checking SCREAMING_SNAKE_CASE constants, Get-prefixed getters, generic package names, or receivers named `this`/`self`.
- `references/IDENTIFIERS.md` - Read when choosing names for initialisms, exported identifiers, or package-level symbols.
- `references/REPETITION.md` - Read when names repeat package, receiver, type, or local context.
- `references/VARIABLES.md` - Read when choosing local variable names, receiver names, or loop identifiers.

## Core Principle

Names should:
- Not feel repetitive when used
- Take context into consideration
- Not repeat concepts that are already clear

Naming is more art than science—Go names tend to be shorter than in other
languages.

---

## Naming Decision Flow

```
What are you naming?
├─ Package       → Short, lowercase, singular noun (no underscores, no mixedCaps)
├─ Interface     → Method name + "-er" suffix when single-method (Reader, Writer)
├─ Receiver      → 1-2 letter abbreviation of type (c for Client); consistent across methods
├─ Constant      → MixedCaps; use iota for enums; no ALL_CAPS
├─ Exported func → Verb or verb-phrase in MixedCaps; no Get prefix for getters
├─ Variable      → Length proportional to scope distance
│                  ├─ Tiny scope (1-7 lines) → single letter (i, n, r)
│                  ├─ Medium scope           → short word (count, buf)
│                  └─ Package-level / wide   → descriptive (userAccountCount)
└─ Any name      → Check: does it repeat package name or context? If yes, shorten it
```

---

## MixedCaps (Required)

> **Normative**: All Go identifiers must use MixedCaps.

Underscores are allowed only in: test functions (`TestFoo_InvalidInput`),
generated code, and OS/cgo interop.

---

## Package Names

> **Normative**: Packages must be lowercase with no underscores.

Short, lowercase, singular nouns. Avoid generic names like `util`, `common`,
`helper` — prefer specific names: `stringutil`, `httpauth`, `configloader`.

```go
// Good: user, oauth2, tabwriter
// Bad:  user_service, UserService, count (shadows var)
```

---

## Interface Names

> **Advisory**: One-method interfaces use "-er" suffix.

Name one-method interfaces by the method plus `-er`: `Reader`, `Writer`,
