A skill that makes your coding agent harden Go code at API boundaries: slice and map copies, defer cleanup, crypto randomness.

## What it does

The skill kicks in when the agent edits or reviews Go code at API boundaries. It walks an eight-step checklist: error handling, input validation, output safety, resource cleanup with `defer`, interface checks, time types, enum safety and crypto safety.

Five reference files sit in `references/`: `BOUNDARY-COPYING.md` for slices and maps, `GLOBAL-STATE.md` for package globals, `MUST-FUNCTIONS.md` for panic-on-error helpers, `PANIC-RECOVER.md` for panic containment, `TIME-ENUMS-TAGS.md` for time types, enum zero values and struct tags. The agent pulls the one it needs instead of loading everything.

One thing to check before you rely on it: the crypto examples use `crypto/rand.Text`, which needs Go 1.24 or newer. On older toolchains that snippet will not compile. Error handling strategy is out of scope here — that belongs to the separate `go-error-handling` skill.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cxuu/golang-skills --skill go-defensive -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/go-defensive/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/go-defensive/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cxuu/golang-skills --skill go-defensive -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/go-defensive/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cxuu/golang-skills --skill go-defensive -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/go-defensive/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install cxuu/golang-skills go-defensive
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/go-defensive/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cxuu/golang-skills --skill go-defensive -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/cxuu/golang-skills --path skills/go-defensive
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/go-defensive/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cxuu/golang-skills --skill go-defensive -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/cxuu/golang-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/go-defensive/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- copy a slice or map on receive and return so callers cannot mutate internal state
- close a file or release a lock with `defer` on every return path
- replace a mutable package global with an injected dependency so tests skip save/restore
- swap `math/rand` for `crypto/rand` where keys are generated
- start an enum at `iota + 1` so the zero value reads as uninitialized

## Example prompts
- review this package at its API boundaries using the go-defensive checklist
- copy the trips slice on receive the way go-defensive suggests
- replace math/rand with crypto/rand in the key generator

description: Use when hardening Go code at API boundaries — copying slices/maps, verifying interface compliance, using defer for cleanup, time.Time/time.Duration, or avoiding mutable globals. Also use when reviewing for robustness concerns like missing cleanup or unsafe crypto usage, even if the user doesn't mention "defensive programming." Does not cover error handling strategy (see go-error-handling).

> Compatibility: Crypto examples may use `crypto/rand.Text`, which requires Go 1.24+.

## Resource Routing

- `references/BOUNDARY-COPYING.md` - Read when copying slices/maps across API boundaries.
- `references/GLOBAL-STATE.md` - Read when introducing or removing package globals.
- `references/MUST-FUNCTIONS.md` - Read when deciding whether a panic-on-error helper is acceptable.
- `references/PANIC-RECOVER.md` - Read when evaluating panic, recover, or crash containment.
- `references/TIME-ENUMS-TAGS.md` - Read when handling time types, enum zero values, or struct tags.

## Defensive Checklist Priority

When hardening code at API boundaries, check in this order:

```
Reviewing an API boundary?
├─ 1. Error handling     → Return errors; don't panic (see go-error-handling)
├─ 2. Input validation   → Copy slices/maps received from callers
├─ 3. Output safety      → Copy slices/maps before returning to callers
├─ 4. Resource cleanup   → Use defer for Close/Unlock/Cancel
├─ 5. Interface checks   → Route compile-time assertions to go-interfaces
├─ 6. Time correctness   → Use time.Time and time.Duration, not int/float
├─ 7. Enum safety        → Start iota at 1 so zero-value is invalid
└─ 8. Crypto safety      → crypto/rand for keys, never math/rand
```

## Quick Reference

| Pattern | Rule | Details |
|---------|------|---------|
| Boundary copies | Copy slices/maps on receive and return | [BOUNDARY-COPYING.md](references/BOUNDARY-COPYING.md) |
| Defer cleanup | `defer f.Close()` right after `os.Open` | Below |
| Interface check | Compile-time satisfaction assertion | See go-interfaces |
| Time types | `time.Time` / `time.Duration`, never raw int | [TIME-ENUMS-TAGS.md](references/TIME-ENUMS-TAGS.md) |
| Enum start | `iota + 1` so zero = invalid | Below |
| Crypto rand | `crypto/rand` for keys, never `math/rand` | Below |
| Must functions | Only at init; panic on failure | [MUST-FUNCTIONS.md](references/MUST-FUNCTIONS.md) |
| Panic/recover | Never expose panics across packages | [PANIC-RECOVER.md](references/PANIC-RECOVER.md) |
| Mutable globals | Replace with dependency injection | Below |
