## What it does

The skill guides agents through idiomatic Go conventions based on Effective Go and Go Code Review Comments. It requires explicit field names during struct initialization and flattens nesting with early guard clauses. For durations, raw integers are prohibited in favor of `time.Duration`. Package imports follow three distinct blocks: standard library, external modules, and internal packages.

Reference guides `references/file-organization.md` and `references/receivers-and-tags.md` load only on demand. The workflow relies on file inspection and CLI execution via `go`, `gofmt`, and `golangci-lint`. Without an installed Go toolchain, this skill cannot run. Using `golangci-lint` remains optional.

Scope boundaries are strict. High-level architecture, concurrency, and performance tuning belong to separate skills. The same applies to identifier naming, except that shadowing built-ins like `len` or `error` is blocked directly here. Verification passes only when `goimports` and `go vet ./...` exit without errors.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --skill go-coding-standards -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/go-coding-standards/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/go-coding-standards/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --skill go-coding-standards -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/go-coding-standards/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --skill go-coding-standards -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/go-coding-standards/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills go-coding-standards
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/go-coding-standards/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --skill go-coding-standards -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --path 'skills/(code-quality)/go-coding-standards'
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/go-coding-standards/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills --skill go-coding-standards -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/eduardo-sl/go-agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/(code-quality)/go-coding-standards/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- Organize imports into standard, external, and internal groups
- Flatten nested code using early returns and guard clauses
- Enforce named field syntax for struct initializations
- Standardize method receiver types across a struct
- Validate struct serialization tags against `go vet`

## Example prompts
- Check Go style and fix import ordering in `internal/service/user.go`
- Refactor this struct initialization and reduce nesting with guard clauses
- Review method receivers and struct tags against Go conventions

# Go Coding Standards

Idiomatic Go conventions grounded in Effective Go, Go Code Review Comments, and production-proven idioms.
All code MUST pass `goimports`, `go vet`, and `staticcheck` (or `golangci-lint run`) without errors.

> Community default. A project skill or agent-config rule that explicitly
> supersedes `go-coding-standards` takes precedence over this one.

Detailed reference material, loaded on demand:

- `references/file-organization.md` — declaration grouping, file order,
  breaking long signatures.
- `references/receivers-and-tags.md` — receiver consistency and struct tag
  examples.

Read a reference file only when the summary below is not enough.

## 1. Import Ordering

Group imports in this order, separated by blank lines:

```go
import (
    // 1. Standard library
    "context"
    "fmt"
    "log/slog"
    "net/http"
    // 2. External packages
    "github.com/gorilla/mux"
    // 3. Internal/project packages
    "github.com/myorg/myproject/internal/service"
)
```

NEVER use dot imports. Use aliasing only to resolve conflicts.

## 2. Naming

Naming is owned by the go-naming skill: packages, stuttering, initialisms,
getters, receivers, error and test names. Two rules stay here because they
are about declarations: do not shadow predeclared identifiers (`len`,
`new`, `error`, `min`, `max`), and unexported package-level variables may
carry a `_` prefix (`_defaultTimeout`) when the codebase uses that
convention.

## 3. Variable Declarations

### Top-level
Use `var` for top-level declarations. Do NOT specify type when it matches the expression:

```go
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the a87f5bfa0932644c tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
