## What it does

The skill walks a checklist: formatting, documentation, error handling, naming, concurrency, interfaces, data structures, security, declarations and functions. It starts with `gofmt -d .` and `go vet ./...`, then reads the diff file by file and flags each issue with a line reference and the rule name. Findings end up grouped as must-fix, should-fix or nit.

Bundled pieces do the heavy lifting. `scripts/pre-review.sh` collects gofmt, go vet and golangci-lint output before you review by hand, `assets/review-template.md` keeps the report structure consistent, and `references/WEB-SERVER.md` covers HTTP servers where concurrency, contexts, logging and shutdown meet. Language syntax is out of scope — the skill hands that to specialized skills.

One thing to check first: the `log/slog` examples in `references/WEB-SERVER.md` need Go 1.21+, so on an older toolchain that reference won't help you. The skill runs under `Bash(bash:*)`, which it needs to execute the script. After the pass it re-reads the diff and drops any finding it can't tie to a specific line.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cxuu/golang-skills --skill go-code-review -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/go-code-review/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/go-code-review/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cxuu/golang-skills --skill go-code-review -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/go-code-review/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cxuu/golang-skills --skill go-code-review -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/go-code-review/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install cxuu/golang-skills go-code-review
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/go-code-review/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cxuu/golang-skills --skill go-code-review -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/cxuu/golang-skills --path skills/go-code-review
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/go-code-review/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cxuu/golang-skills --skill go-code-review -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- catch mechanical formatting issues before reading the diff by hand
- check exported names for missing doc comments
- spot discarded errors and magic values like -1 or nil
- review an HTTP server mixing concurrency, contexts and shutdown
- sort findings by severity before submitting a PR

## Example prompts
- review this Go file against the checklist
- check my diff against Go style standards before I open a PR
- run pre-review.sh and walk me through the gofmt and go vet results

# Go Code Review Checklist

> Compatibility: `references/WEB-SERVER.md` uses `log/slog` examples that require Go 1.21+.

## Resource Routing

- `assets/review-template.md` - Use when formatting review output with Must Fix, Should Fix, and Nits sections.
- `scripts/pre-review.sh` - Run before manual review to collect gofmt, go vet, and golangci-lint results.
- `references/WEB-SERVER.md` - Read when reviewing an HTTP server that combines concurrency, context, logging, error handling, and shutdown behavior.

## Review Procedure

> Use `assets/review-template.md` when formatting the output of a code review to ensure consistent structure with Must Fix / Should Fix / Nits severity grouping.

1. Run `gofmt -d .` and `go vet ./...` to catch mechanical issues first
2. Read the diff file-by-file; for each file, check the categories below in order
3. Flag issues with specific line references and the rule name
4. After reviewing all files, re-read flagged items to verify they're genuine issues
5. Summarize findings grouped by severity (must-fix, should-fix, nit)

> **Validation**: After completing the review, re-read the diff once more to verify every flagged issue is real. Remove any finding you cannot justify with a specific line reference.

## Formatting

- [ ] **gofmt**: Code is formatted with `gofmt` or `goimports` → [go-linting](../go-linting/SKILL.md)

---

## Documentation

- [ ] **Comment sentences**: Comments are full sentences starting with the name being described, ending with a period → [go-documentation](../go-documentation/SKILL.md)
- [ ] **Doc comments**: All exported names have doc comments; non-trivial unexported declarations too → [go-documentation](../go-documentation/SKILL.md)
- [ ] **Package comments**: Package comment appears adjacent to package clause with no blank line → [go-documentation](../go-documentation/SKILL.md)
- [ ] **Named result parameters**: Only used when they clarify meaning (e.g., multiple same-type returns), not just to enable naked returns → [go-documentation](../go-documentation/SKILL.md)

---

## Error Handling

- [ ] **Handle errors**: No discarded errors with `_`; handle, return, or (exceptionally) panic → [go-error-handling](../go-error-handling/SKILL.md)
