# deep-research

Runs deep research on any topic through the OpenAI Deep Research API: sharpens the prompt with follow-up questions, saves the parameters, returns a report with sources.

## What it does

The skill takes your research request and checks whether it is too short or generic. If it is, you get 2–3 clarifying questions about scope, depth and focus. Your answers are merged with the original wording into structured research parameters and written to `research_prompt_YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS.txt`, so the run can be repeated later.

Then `scripts/run_deep_research.py` takes over and calls the OpenAI Responses API with web search enabled. The default model is `gpt-5.6-sol` at reasoning level `high`; override it with `--model`, `--reasoning` or the `DEEP_RESEARCH_MODEL` environment variable. Expect a long wait: the run goes to the background, the script polls every 15 seconds and blocks until it finishes, with a 3600-second ceiling you can change via `--timeout`. You need `OPENAI_API_KEY` in your environment or the request never leaves.

Output is a markdown report `research_report_…md` with footer lines for the model and response ID, the raw JSON `research_response_…json` holding citation spans and the web-search step log, plus a list of every URL the search steps opened. Those pages are consulted, not cited — citations are the inline links. If a run is interrupted or times out, collect it with `--resume <response_id>` and no new paid request is sent.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add glebis/claude-skills --skill deep-research -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/deep-research/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/deep-research/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add glebis/claude-skills --skill deep-research -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/deep-research/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add glebis/claude-skills --skill deep-research -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/deep-research/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install glebis/claude-skills deep-research
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/deep-research/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add glebis/claude-skills --skill deep-research -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/glebis/claude-skills --path deep-research
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/deep-research/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add glebis/claude-skills --skill deep-research -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/glebis/claude-skills/tree/HEAD/deep-research/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pull together a topic overview backed by fresh web sources
- turn a one-line query into structured research parameters
- keep the raw API response with citation spans for later parsing
- finish an interrupted run without paying for the request twice
- see every page the search opened, not just the cited ones

## Example prompts
- Research the most effective open-source RAG solutions with strong benchmark results
- Investigate how language models affect developer productivity, focused on 2024–2025
- Run deep research on distributed database systems, skip the clarifying questions

# Deep Research Skill

## Purpose

This skill enables comprehensive, internet-enabled research on any topic using the OpenAI Responses API with web search (default model `gpt-5.6-sol`, override with `--model` or `DEEP_RESEARCH_MODEL`). `o3-deep-research` and `o4-mini-deep-research` were scheduled for shutdown on 2026-07-23 and are no longer the default. It intelligently enhances user research prompts through interactive clarifying questions, ensures research parameters are saved for reproducibility, and executes deep research with full web search capabilities.

## When to Use This Skill

Trigger this skill when:
- User requests research on a specific topic
- User asks for analysis, investigation, or comprehensive information gathering
- User wants exploration of a subject with web search and reasoning
- User provides a brief research query that could be refined
- User wants to understand current state, trends, or comparisons in a field

Example user requests:
- "Research the most effective open-source RAG solutions with high benchmark performance"
- "What are the latest AI developments in 2025?"
- "I need a comprehensive analysis of distributed database systems"
- "Find best practices for implementing vector search"
- "Investigate how AI is impacting the software engineering industry"

## Workflow Overview
