## What it does

The skill investigates multi-slice Cloud TPU training hangs across GKE pods. It correlates Megascale `HANG_DETECTED` log events and ML Diagnostics MXLA reports via `gcloud alpha mldiagnostics monitored-events` with 1-minute multi-slice latency metrics from `kubernetes.io/container/multislice/*`. This pinpoints whether training froze due to compiler launch divergence, host input stalls, or broken ICI fabrics.

Prerequisites include `kubectl` and the Google Cloud SDK with the `alpha` component installed. Your cluster must run GKE version `1.36.0-gke.4681000` or later, use LibTPU `0.40.0` or newer, and host JAX workloads using `jobset` or `job` resources. Workloads built on PyTorch will fail to return monitored events through this diagnostic tool.

Diagnostic routines follow a strict read-only policy. The skill queries monitoring and logging data without draining nodes, modifying clusters, or deleting pods.

## Requirements
- Works with: Kubernetes

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add google/skills --skill gke-ai-troubleshooting-tpu-mxla-hang -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/gke-ai-troubleshooting-tpu-mxla-hang/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/gke-ai-troubleshooting-tpu-mxla-hang/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add google/skills --skill gke-ai-troubleshooting-tpu-mxla-hang -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/gke-ai-troubleshooting-tpu-mxla-hang/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/gke-ai-troubleshooting-tpu-mxla-hang/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install google/skills gke-ai-troubleshooting-tpu-mxla-hang
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/gke-ai-troubleshooting-tpu-mxla-hang/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add google/skills --skill gke-ai-troubleshooting-tpu-mxla-hang -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/google/skills --path skills/cloud/gke-ai-troubleshooting-tpu-mxla-hang
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/gke-ai-troubleshooting-tpu-mxla-hang/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/google/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/cloud/gke-ai-troubleshooting-tpu-mxla-hang/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- Diagnose GKE Cloud TPU multi-slice training hangs emitting HANG_DETECTED
- Isolate XLA compiler HLO divergence from ICI interconnect failures
- Inspect 1-minute multi-slice latency metrics in Cloud Monitoring
- Pull MXLA Hang Analyzer reports via gcloud alpha mldiagnostics

## Example prompts
- Diagnose the TPU multi-slice training hang with HANG_DETECTED logs in project {project_id}
- Run MXLA Hang Analyzer diagnostics on stalled GKE JAX jobset workers
- Check multislice latency metrics to see why TPU slices stopped progressing

# Troubleshoot GKE TPU multi-slice hangs with the MXLA Hang Analyzer

Diagnose Cloud TPU multi-slice training hangs on Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE)
by correlating Megascale `HANG_DETECTED` logs and **ML Diagnostics Workload
Monitoring** `Megascale XLA (MXLA) Hang Analyzer` reports with **1-minute
multi-slice latency metrics** (`kubernetes.io/container/multislice/*`) and GKE
node topology labels.

## Attribution

**MUST READ**: Before executing any `gcloud`, REST API, or MCP command, you
MUST read [Usage Attribution](references/attribution.md). For commands executed
directly in the terminal (never in generated scripts, Terraform, or user code),
prefix `gcloud` with
`CLOUDSDK_METRICS_REQUEST_ATTRIBUTION="agent-skills/1.0 (skill:gke-ai-troubleshooting-tpu-mxla-hang)"`
and append `agent-skills/1.0 (skill:gke-ai-troubleshooting-tpu-mxla-hang)` to `User-Agent` headers.

## Prerequisites

- **Tools**: Install the
  [Google Cloud SDK](https://cloud.google.com/sdk/docs/install) (`gcloud` with
  `alpha` component for `gcloud alpha mldiagnostics`) and `kubectl`.
- **Cloud Billing & Project Configuration**: Verify an active billing account is
  linked (`gcloud billing projects describe {project_id}`), authenticate
  (`gcloud auth login`), set the target project (`gcloud config set project
  {project_id}`), and ensure `container.googleapis.com`,
  `logging.googleapis.com`, `monitoring.googleapis.com`, and
  `hypercomputecluster.googleapis.com` are enabled.
- **Supported workloads and versions**: Google Cloud ML Diagnostics only
  supports JAX on TPUs (see
  [ML Diagnostics platform](https://docs.cloud.google.com/tpu/docs/ml-diagnostics/overview.md.txt)).
