## What it does

The skill gives an agent access to your Google NotebookLM notebooks. Through the `nlm` CLI it lists notebooks, adds sources (URLs, text, files, YouTube, Google Drive), asks questions against that content, and pulls generated artifacts: audio, video, reports, quizzes. Useful when project documentation lives in NotebookLM instead of the repo.

Inside is a step-by-step flow: check that the CLI is installed and authenticated, find the target notebook by name or alias, run the operation, present the result. Aliases save you from memorising UUIDs. Tool access is limited to `Bash`, `Read` and `Write`.

You need `notebooklm-mcp-cli` installed and a session from `nlm login`, which opens Chrome to extract cookies. Those cookies last roughly 2–4 weeks, then calls start failing and you run `nlm login` again. The free tier allows about 50 queries per day. The skill tells the agent to get your confirmation before acting on NotebookLM answers.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill notebooklm -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/notebooklm/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/notebooklm/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill notebooklm -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/notebooklm/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill notebooklm -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/notebooklm/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit notebooklm
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/notebooklm/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill notebooklm -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --path plugins/developer-kit-tools/skills/notebooklm
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/notebooklm/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill notebooklm -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit/tree/HEAD/plugins/developer-kit-tools/skills/notebooklm/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- ask a question against docs stored in NotebookLM
- add a URL, file or YouTube video as a notebook source
- generate an audio podcast or report from a notebook
- download a generated artifact to a file
- check whether Google Drive sources have gone stale

## Example prompts
- Ask notebooklm what the login requirements are in the project docs
- Add this URL to the myproject notebook and wait for processing
- Generate a Briefing Doc report from the myproject notebook

# NotebookLM Integration

Interact with Google NotebookLM for advanced RAG capabilities — query project documentation, manage research sources, and retrieve AI-synthesized information from notebooks.

## Overview

This skill integrates with the [notebooklm-mcp-cli](https://github.com/jacob-bd/notebooklm-mcp-cli) tool (`nlm` CLI) to provide programmatic access to Google NotebookLM. It enables agents to manage notebooks, add sources, perform contextual queries, and retrieve generated artifacts like audio podcasts or reports.

## When to Use

Use this skill when:

- Querying project documentation stored in Google NotebookLM
- Retrieving AI-synthesized information from notebooks (e.g., summaries, Q&A)
- Managing notebooks: creating, listing, renaming, or deleting
- Adding sources to notebooks: URLs, text, files, YouTube, Google Drive
- Generating studio content: audio podcasts, video explainers, reports, quizzes
- Downloading generated artifacts (audio, video, reports, mind maps)
- Performing research queries across web or Google Drive
- Checking freshness and syncing Google Drive sources
- An agent is tasked with using documentation stored in NotebookLM for implementation

**Trigger phrases:** "query notebooklm", "search notebook", "add source to notebook", "create podcast from notebook", "generate report from notebook", "nlm query"

## Prerequisites

### Installation

```bash
# Install via uv (recommended)
uv tool install notebooklm-mcp-cli
# Or via pip
pip install notebooklm-mcp-cli
# Verify installation
nlm --version
```

### Authentication

```bash
# Login — opens Chrome for cookie extraction
nlm login
# Verify authentication
nlm login --check
# Use named profiles for multiple Google accounts
nlm login --profile work
nlm login --profile personal
nlm login switch work
```

### Diagnostics

```bash
# Run diagnostics if issues occur
nlm doctor
nlm doctor --verbose
```

> **⚠️ Important:** This tool uses internal Google APIs. Cookies expire every ~2-4 weeks — run `nlm login` again when operations fail. Free tier has ~50 queries/day rate limit.
