## What it does

The skill sets a working order for AWS CDK in TypeScript. It covers writing an app, a stack or a reusable construct, picking between L1, L2 and L3 levels, building serverless and VPC-based setups, wiring multi-stack applications and splitting environments. IAM and encryption defaults get their own section.

Inside are instructions and code samples: project init with `npx cdk init app --language typescript`, the folder layout, and the lifecycle commands `cdk synth`, `cdk diff`, `cdk deploy`, `cdk destroy`, `cdk ls`, `cdk doctor`. A delivery loop runs through synthesis, infrastructure tests, diff and deploy, with a checkpoint at each step. For diff it tells you to watch IAM broadening, resource replacement and deletes on stateful resources. That is where a careless change slips through, so read the diff before you apply it.

The skill is allowed Read, Write, Edit, Bash, Grep and Glob, so the agent can run CDK commands and read your project files. You need Node.js installed and AWS access configured; the samples pull the account from `CDK_DEFAULT_ACCOUNT`.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill aws-cdk -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/aws-cdk/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/aws-cdk/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill aws-cdk -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/aws-cdk/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill aws-cdk -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/aws-cdk/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit aws-cdk
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/aws-cdk/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill aws-cdk -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --path plugins/developer-kit-typescript/skills/aws-cdk
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/aws-cdk/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill aws-cdk -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- scaffold a new CDK stack in TypeScript
- extract repeated logic into a custom construct
- build a serverless API from Lambda, DynamoDB and API Gateway
- pass a VPC from a network stack into an app stack
- review a diff for resource replacement and deletes

## Example prompts
- Create a new CDK stack in TypeScript for a serverless API
- Refactor this stack and move the bucket into a reusable construct
- Check `cdk diff` and tell me what is risky to deploy here

description: Provides AWS CDK TypeScript patterns for defining, validating, and deploying AWS infrastructure as code. Use when creating CDK apps, stacks, and reusable constructs, modeling serverless or VPC-based architectures, applying IAM and encryption defaults, or testing and reviewing `cdk synth`, `cdk diff`, and `cdk deploy` changes. Triggers include "aws cdk typescript", "create cdk app", "cdk stack", "cdk construct", "cdk deploy", and "cdk test".

# AWS CDK TypeScript

## Overview

Use this skill to build AWS infrastructure in TypeScript with reusable constructs, safe defaults, and a validation-first delivery loop.

## When to Use

Use this skill when:

- Creating or refactoring a CDK app, stack, or reusable construct in TypeScript
- Choosing between L1, L2, and L3 constructs
- Building serverless, networking, or security-focused AWS infrastructure
- Wiring multi-stack applications and environment-aware deployments
- Validating infrastructure changes with `cdk synth`, tests, `cdk diff`, and `cdk deploy`

## Instructions

### 1. Project Initialization

```bash
# Create a new CDK app
npx cdk init app --language typescript
# Project structure
my-cdk-app/
├── bin/
│   └── my-cdk-app.ts          # App entry point (instantiates stacks)
├── lib/
│   └── my-cdk-app-stack.ts    # Stack definition
├── test/
│   └── my-cdk-app.test.ts     # Tests
├── cdk.json                    # CDK configuration
├── tsconfig.json
└── package.json
```

### 2. Core Architecture

```typescript
import { App, Stack, StackProps, CfnOutput, RemovalPolicy } from 'aws-cdk-lib';
import { Construct } from 'constructs';
import * as s3 from 'aws-cdk-lib/aws-s3';
// Define a reusable stack
class StorageStack extends Stack {
  public readonly bucketArn: string;
  constructor(scope: Construct, id: string, props?: StackProps) {
    super(scope, id, props);
    const bucket = new s3.Bucket(this, 'DataBucket', {
      versioned: true,
      encryption: s3.BucketEncryption.S3_MANAGED,
      removalPolicy: RemovalPolicy.RETAIN,
      blockPublicAccess: s3.BlockPublicAccess.BLOCK_ALL,
    });
    this.bucketArn = bucket.bucketArn;
    new CfnOutput(this, 'BucketName', { value: bucket.bucketName });
  }
}
// App entry point
const app = new App();
new StorageStack(app, 'DevStorage', {
  env: { account: process.env.CDK_DEFAULT_ACCOUNT, region: 'us-east-1' },
  tags: { Environment: 'dev' },
});
