## What it does

gitlab-mcp-skill gives an agent instructions for working with the GitLab MCP server. It covers merge requests, issues, repositories, branches, projects, pipelines, work items, variables, dependency proxy, vulnerabilities, webhooks, and search. The guide describes 278 tools across 24 toolsets, plus `discover_tools` and `execute_graphql`.

The included workflows show how to review changed files, fetch diffs, leave comments, publish draft notes, create and merge merge requests, and manage issues. Toolsets are enabled with `GITLAB_TOOLSETS`; individual tools can be added with `GITLAB_TOOLS`. Only `core` is enabled by default.

\`gitlab_api_request` bypasses group, project, and tool restrictions, and prompt injection can drive the call. If your setup relies on those restrictions, that is a reason to leave this tool disabled.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitLab

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zereight/gitlab-mcp --skill gitlab-mcp-skill -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add zereight/gitlab-mcp --skill gitlab-mcp -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/gitlab-mcp/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/gitlab-mcp/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zereight/gitlab-mcp --skill gitlab-mcp -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/gitlab-mcp/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zereight/gitlab-mcp --skill gitlab-mcp -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/gitlab-mcp/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install zereight/gitlab-mcp gitlab-mcp
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/gitlab-mcp/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zereight/gitlab-mcp --skill gitlab-mcp -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/zereight/gitlab-mcp --path skills/gitlab-mcp
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/gitlab-mcp/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zereight/gitlab-mcp --skill gitlab-mcp -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/zereight/gitlab-mcp/tree/HEAD/skills/gitlab-mcp/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- review changed files in a merge request
- create an issue and link it to another issue
- validate a GitLab CI configuration
- manage branches, tags, and project settings
- update variables or dependency proxy settings

## Example prompts
- Review this merge request: list changed files, fetch the diffs, then create review comments.
- Create an issue, link it to the related issue, and add a note with the proposed fix.
- Validate the GitLab CI configuration and enable the required tools with `GITLAB_TOOLSETS`.
