# github-workflow

A rule set that tells your agent how to work with GitHub: pull requests, review comments, Actions workflows, issue templates and branch protection. Useful whenever the agent touches a repo.

## What it does

The skill gives the model a working frame for GitHub. It covers pull requests, code review, GitHub Actions, issue templates and repository management. Each section is concrete: a PR description template with summary, changes and testing, review comment prefixes (`blocking:`, `suggestion:`, `question:`, `nit:`, `praise:`), and YAML workflow examples with dependency caching and job timeouts.

Security gets its own blocks. Secrets instead of hardcoded values, action versions pinned by SHA, `GITHUB_TOKEN` permissions narrowed through `permissions`. There are also templates for `.github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/`, a `CODEOWNERS` layout, main branch protection rules and auto-merge for Dependabot updates.

Nothing here executes on its own. It is an instruction file for the model, so it only pays off if your agent can read repo files and call `gh`. No GitHub in the project means nothing to install.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitHub

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill github-workflow -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/github-workflow/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/github-workflow/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill github-workflow -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/github-workflow/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill github-workflow -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/github-workflow/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Mindrally/skills github-workflow
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/github-workflow/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill github-workflow -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Mindrally/skills --path github-workflow
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/github-workflow/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill github-workflow -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Mindrally/skills/tree/HEAD/github-workflow/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- open a pull request with a description, test notes and a linked issue
- label review comments by severity so the author knows what blocks the merge
- write a CI workflow with npm caching and a job timeout
- set up issue templates for bug reports and feature requests
- tighten token permissions and protect the main branch

## Example prompts
- Split my changes into a stack of three pull requests and write a description for each
- Review this PR and tag each comment with blocking, suggestion or nit
- Write a GitHub Actions workflow: Node.js 20 build, npm cache, run tests

# GitHub Workflow Best Practices

You are an expert in GitHub workflows, including pull requests, code reviews, GitHub Actions, issue management, and repository best practices.

## Core Principles

- Use pull requests for all code changes to enable review and discussion
- Automate workflows with GitHub Actions for CI/CD
- Maintain clear issue tracking and project management
- Follow security best practices for repository access and secrets
- Document repositories thoroughly with README and contributing guidelines

## Pull Request Best Practices

### Creating Effective Pull Requests

1. **Keep PRs small and focused**
   - One feature or fix per PR
   - Aim for under 400 lines of changes when possible
   - Split large features into stacked PRs

2. **Write descriptive PR titles**
   - Use conventional commit style: `feat: add user authentication`
   - Be specific about what the PR accomplishes

3. **PR Description Template**
   ```markdown
   ## Summary
   Brief description of changes and motivation.
   ## Changes
   - Bullet points of specific changes made
   ## Testing
   - How the changes were tested
   - Steps to reproduce/verify
   ## Related Issues
   Closes #123
   ## Screenshots (if applicable)
   ```

4. **Link related issues**
   - Use `Closes #123` or `Fixes #123` to auto-close issues
   - Reference related issues with `#123`

### Stacked Pull Requests

For complex features, use stacked PRs:

1. Create a base feature branch
2. Create subsequent PRs that build on each other
3. Merge in order from base to top
4. Keep each PR small and reviewable

## Code Review Guidelines

### As a Reviewer

1. **Review promptly** - Respond within 24 hours when possible
2. **Be constructive** - Focus on improvement, not criticism
3. **Ask questions** - Seek to understand before suggesting changes
4. **Prioritize feedback**:
   - Blocking: Security issues, bugs, breaking changes
   - Important: Performance, maintainability
   - Nice-to-have: Style preferences, minor improvements

### Comment Conventions

Use prefixes to indicate comment severity:

- `blocking:` Must be addressed before merge
- `suggestion:` Recommended improvement
- `question:` Seeking clarification
- `nit:` Minor style or preference (optional to address)
- `praise:` Positive feedback on good code

### Example Review Comments

```
blocking: This SQL query is vulnerable to injection.
Please use parameterized queries.
suggestion: Consider extracting this logic into a separate
