## What it does

This skill covers the whole path of a GitHub webhook: the request arrives, you confirm it really came from GitHub, then you route it by event type. It ships verification functions in Node and Python, a table of common events (`push`, `pull_request`, `issues`, `release`, `workflow_run`, `ping`), and a rundown of the headers that matter.

Signature verification is where most handlers break. GitHub signs the raw body with HMAC-SHA256 and sends the digest in `X-Hub-Signature-256` as `sha256=<hex>`. The skill is blunt about the details: use that header rather than the legacy SHA-1 `X-Hub-Signature`, pass the **raw** body, and compare timing-safe. Parse the JSON first and the signature will never match.

For complete handlers with route wiring, event dispatch and tests, the repository carries examples for Express, Next.js and FastAPI. You need `GITHUB_WEBHOOK_SECRET` set to the same value you entered when creating the webhook in GitHub. Local testing works through a tunnel — `npx hookdeck-cli listen 3000 github --path /webhooks/github` — and needs no account.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitHub

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hookdeck/webhook-skills --skill github-webhooks -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/github-webhooks/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/github-webhooks/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hookdeck/webhook-skills --skill github-webhooks -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/github-webhooks/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hookdeck/webhook-skills --skill github-webhooks -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/github-webhooks/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install hookdeck/webhook-skills github-webhooks
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/github-webhooks/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hookdeck/webhook-skills --skill github-webhooks -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/hookdeck/webhook-skills --path skills/github-webhooks
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/github-webhooks/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hookdeck/webhook-skills --skill github-webhooks -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/hookdeck/webhook-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/github-webhooks/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- verify a GitHub webhook signature and reject forged requests
- tell push, pull_request and issues events apart
- debug a failing `X-Hub-Signature-256` check
- test webhooks locally through a tunnel before deploying
- write a handler for release or workflow_run events

## Example prompts
- Set up a GitHub webhook handler in Express: verify the signature first, then dispatch the event
- My `X-Hub-Signature-256` check keeps failing — look at the code and find the bug
- Write a pull_request handler with idempotency and logging

# GitHub Webhooks

## When to Use This Skill

- Setting up GitHub webhook handlers
- Debugging signature verification failures
- Understanding GitHub event types and payloads
- Handling push, pull request, or issue events

## Verification (core)

GitHub signs the raw body with HMAC-SHA256 keyed on your webhook secret and sends the digest in `X-Hub-Signature-256` formatted as `sha256=<hex>`. Use `X-Hub-Signature-256` (not the legacy SHA-1 `X-Hub-Signature`), pass the **raw** body, and compare timing-safe.

Node:

```javascript
const crypto = require('crypto');
function verify(rawBody, signatureHeader, secret) {
  const [algo, sig] = (signatureHeader || '').split('=');
  if (algo !== 'sha256' || !sig) return false;
  const expected = crypto.createHmac('sha256', secret).update(rawBody).digest('hex');
  try {
    return crypto.timingSafeEqual(Buffer.from(sig), Buffer.from(expected));
  } catch {
    return false;
  }
}
```

Python:

```python
import hmac, hashlib
def verify(raw_body: bytes, signature_header: str, secret: str) -> bool:
    algo, _, sig = (signature_header or "").partition("=")
    if algo != "sha256" or not sig:
        return False
    expected = hmac.new(secret.encode(), raw_body, hashlib.sha256).hexdigest()
    return hmac.compare_digest(sig, expected)
```

## Common Event Types

| Event | Description |
|-------|-------------|
| `push` | Commits pushed to branch |
| `pull_request` | PR opened, closed, merged, etc. |
| `issues` | Issue opened, closed, labeled, etc. |
| `release` | Release published |
| `workflow_run` | GitHub Actions workflow completed |
| `ping` | Test event when webhook created |

> **For full event reference**, see [GitHub Webhook Events](https://docs.github.com/en/webhooks/webhook-events-and-payloads)

## Important Headers

| Header | Description |
|--------|-------------|
| `X-Hub-Signature-256` | HMAC SHA-256 signature (use this, not sha1) |
| `X-GitHub-Event` | Event type (push, pull_request, etc.) |
