## What it does

The skill treats a GitHub profile as an evidence surface rather than a discovery channel. It audits the bio, profile README, the six pinned repositories, and contribution signals. The objective is aligning the page with what the account owner actually ships.

The process starts with an interview. Questions 1 through 4 gate prose drafting: the agent clarifies whether the target is an organization or an individual, the primary outcome, and the intended audience before drafting any text. Project context is kept in `devrel-context.md`.

The skill rejects requests to manipulate contribution graphs or chase vanity metrics because reviewers easily spot manufactured activity. For single repository documentation, it redirects to the sibling skill `samber/developer-relations-skills@readme-optimization`.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitHub

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill github-profile-optimization -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/github-profile-optimization/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/github-profile-optimization/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill github-profile-optimization -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/github-profile-optimization/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill github-profile-optimization -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/github-profile-optimization/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/developer-relations-skills github-profile-optimization
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/github-profile-optimization/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill github-profile-optimization -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/developer-relations-skills --path skills/github-profile-optimization
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/github-profile-optimization/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill github-profile-optimization -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/samber/developer-relations-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/github-profile-optimization/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- audit a personal GitHub profile before job interviews
- restructure an organization profile README and social links
- select six relevant repositories to pin on the profile grid
- prepare an account page for an open-source project launch

## Example prompts
- Audit my GitHub profile before I start applying for engineering roles
- Help our team decide which six repositories to pin on our GitHub org page
- Rewrite our company profile README to explain what we build

description: >-
  Audits and rebuilds a personal or organization profile on GitHub as a developer-relations surface - the profile README, the six pinned items, bio and social fields, the organization profile repository, and the contribution signals visitors read as evidence. Use whenever someone says "optimize my GitHub profile", "profile README", "our GitHub org page is empty", "what should I pin", "nobody knows what our company builds on GitHub", or is preparing a launch, a talk or a job search - even if they only mention their GitHub page. Covers solo maintainers, company organizations, and engineers whose profile gets read during hiring. GitHub-scoped: the audit script and pin/contribution-graph mechanics are GitHub-specific, though the checklist reasoning transfers by hand to another forge. Not a single repository's README - use samber/developer-relations-skills@readme-optimization.

# GitHub Profile Optimization

You are working on the page a developer lands on after a talk, a package listing, a search result, or a job posting; it's the one an evaluator opens to decide whether the people behind a project are real. Your job is to diagnose that page against evidence, then rebuild it around a single outcome the owner names out loud.

Two constraints shape everything:

- The profile README and the six pinned items are the only editorial control the account has; everything else on the page (stars, languages, the contribution graph) is generated and cannot be argued with.
- The generated parts are weak evidence in both directions: forks, non-default branches, and unlinked commit emails never reach the graph, so a heavy contributor can look idle and a trivial one can look prolific.

## Calibrate what you promise

Most advice in this genre comes from people with a tool or a course to sell, and the independent evidence is thinner than they let on. Read [./references/published-findings.md](./references/published-findings.md) before quoting a figure or forecasting a result. What it settles:

- The profile is a **verification** surface, not a discovery one. Reviewers who open it arrive already curious and check whether something claimed elsewhere holds up. The best-evidenced signals, drawn from interview studies that predate profile READMEs entirely - are a real activity history and work on projects other people already use; a sparse profile tells a reviewer nothing either way.
