## What it does

The `github-presence` skill walks the agent through three things: how a README is laid out, how a profile README works, and how people discover a repository through topics and awesome lists. It ships a section-by-section table marking which parts are required and which are optional, a ready template with banner and badges, guidance on which badges carry weight (build status, version, license, coverage), and a do/don't table for the profile page.

Before anything else the skill asks for `.agents/developer-audience-context.md` if that file exists, then an audit of the current setup: profile, pinned repos, READMEs. The reasoning is blunt — on GitHub your project gets judged before anyone runs it, so the first screen matters more than the feature list underneath.

A separate section deals with repository topics and search. Topics are grouped by technology, framework, use case and problem. You add them in repository settings, up to 20. This one is aimed at a developer promoting their own project or profile.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitHub

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill github-presence -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/github-presence/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/github-presence/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill github-presence -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/github-presence/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill github-presence -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/github-presence/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jonathimer/devmarketing-skills github-presence
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/github-presence/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill github-presence -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --path skills/github-presence
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/github-presence/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jonathimer/devmarketing-skills --skill github-presence -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jonathimer/devmarketing-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/github-presence/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- rewrite a README so people reach the quick start
- set up a profile README and pin the right projects
- pick repository topics that match GitHub search
- get listed in awesome lists for your niche
- decide which badges are worth putting up

## Example prompts
- Review my README and tell me what to move so the project is clear faster
- Help me build a profile README with pinned projects, current work and contacts
- Suggest repository topics so people find this repo through GitHub search

# GitHub Presence

GitHub is where developers evaluate your project before trying it. This skill covers README optimization, profile READMEs, discoverability through topics and awesome lists, and using GitHub features for marketing.

## Before You Start

1. Read `.agents/developer-audience-context.md` if it exists
2. Audit your current GitHub presence (profile, pinned repos, READMEs)
3. Understand: GitHub is often the first technical evaluation — optimize accordingly
