# git-branch-cleanup

Sorts local branches by merge status and remote tracking, then deletes the ones you pick after a confirmation. Useful once git branch gets out of hand.

## What it does

The skill runs five steps: gather branch data, sort into categories, show the list, check the safety guards, then delete. Categories cover merged branches, branches whose upstream is gone, stale ones with no commits for 30+ days, branches checked out in a worktree, branches with unpushed commits, and unmerged work. The base branch is auto-detected from `origin/HEAD` and falls back to `main`.

Deletion uses `git branch -d` for merged branches and `git branch -D` for the rest. `main`, `master`, `trunk`, `develop`, `development` and the branch you are on are never touched. A branch tied to a worktree has to have that worktree removed first, otherwise the delete fails. There is a preview mode: say "--dry-run" or "preview" and the commands are only printed.

Git 2.17+ is required for worktree support, and 2.22+ is recommended for `git branch --show-current`. The `git fetch --prune` step needs network access; offline it fails, but the analysis still runs on cached remote data. The 30-day stale threshold is a suggested starting point, so shorten it for two-week sprints.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add gotalab/skillport --skill git-branch-cleanup -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/git-branch-cleanup/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/git-branch-cleanup/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add gotalab/skillport --skill git-branch-cleanup -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/git-branch-cleanup/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add gotalab/skillport --skill git-branch-cleanup -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/git-branch-cleanup/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install gotalab/skillport git-branch-cleanup
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/git-branch-cleanup/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add gotalab/skillport --skill git-branch-cleanup -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/gotalab/skillport --path .skills/experimental/git-branch-cleanup
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/git-branch-cleanup/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add gotalab/skillport --skill git-branch-cleanup -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/gotalab/skillport/tree/HEAD/.skills/experimental/git-branch-cleanup/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find branches that are already merged and safe to drop
- clear out branches whose remote was deleted
- tell a stale branch apart from active work
- avoid deleting a branch with unpushed commits
- free a branch that is locked by a worktree

## Example prompts
- clean up my local branches and show what is safe to delete
- which branches are already merged into main?
- list branches with a gone remote, but preview first, do not delete anything

# Git Branch Cleanup

Safely organize and clean up local Git branches. Categorizes branches by merge status, staleness, and remote tracking, then guides users through safe deletion.

## Contents

- Quick Start
- Workflow (Steps 1-5)
- Commands Reference
- Dry Run Mode
- Safety Checklist

## Quick Start

1. Analyze branches (Step 1)
2. Categorize by safety level (Step 2)
3. Display results and ask user which to delete (Step 3)
4. Verify against safety guards (Step 4)
5. Execute deletion after confirmation (Step 5)

## Workflow

### Step 1: Branch Analysis

Collect information with these commands:

```bash
# Decide base branch (prefer auto-detect; fallback to main)
BASE_BRANCH="$(
  git symbolic-ref --quiet --short refs/remotes/origin/HEAD 2>/dev/null | sed 's@^origin/@@'
)"
[ -n "$BASE_BRANCH" ] || BASE_BRANCH=main
# List all branches with last commit date
git for-each-ref --sort=-committerdate refs/heads/ \
  --format='%(refname:short)|%(committerdate:relative)|%(upstream:trackshort)|%(contents:subject)'
# Merged branches (against base)
git branch --merged "$BASE_BRANCH"
# Unmerged branches
git branch --no-merged "$BASE_BRANCH"
# Branches whose upstream is gone (remote deleted)
git branch -vv | grep -F ': gone]' || true
# List worktrees (branches with '+' prefix in git branch -v have worktrees)
git worktree list
# Branches with worktrees ('+' prefix indicates worktree association)
git branch -v | grep '^+' || true
# Branches ahead of upstream (have unpushed commits)
git for-each-ref refs/heads \
  --format='%(refname:short) %(upstream:trackshort)' \
  | grep '>' || true
```

### Step 2: Categorization

Categorize branches by safety level:

| Category | Description | Safety |
|----------|-------------|--------|
| **Merged (Safe)** | Already merged to base branch | Safe to delete |
| **Gone Remote** | Remote branch deleted | Review recommended |
| **Stale** | No commits for 30+ days | Needs review |
| **Has Worktree** | Branch checked out in a worktree (`+` prefix in `git branch -v`) | Remove worktree first |
| **Ahead of Upstream** | Has unpushed commits | ⚠️ Do not delete |
| **Unmerged** | Active work in progress | Use caution |
