# ghost-bits-cast-attack

A Ghost Bits playbook: how a 16-bit Java char narrows to an 8-bit byte and slips past WAFs in front of SQLi, deserialization and webshell uploads.

## What it does

The skill covers a primitive, not a vulnerability class of its own. Java keeps characters in 16 bits while HTTP, SMTP and Redis speak in 8-bit bytes. When code narrows a `char` to a `byte` without explicit charset encoding, the high 8 bits vanish. The WAF sees harmless Unicode, the backend rebuilds the original ASCII attack byte.

Three root-cause families are laid out: literal truncation through `(byte) ch` or `ch & 0xFF`, bit-arithmetic folding in fast hex decoders, and lax Unicode normalization. Each comes with payload shapes and hints on what to grep for in source. The affected list runs from Tomcat, Spring, Jetty, Undertow and Vert.x to Jackson, Fastjson, Apache Commons BCEL, Apache HttpClient, Angus Mail, JDK HttpServer, Lettuce, Jodd and XMLWriter. Because the WAF is bypassed, plenty of already-patched CVEs come back into play.

It applies when you have a Java backend, a WAF or IDS in front of it, and one of these on the menu: SQL injection, deserialization RCE, file upload, path traversal, CRLF, request smuggling, SMTP injection. No Java backend means the trick does not land. A separate `PAYLOAD_COOKBOOK.md` holds the byte-to-Ghost-character table, a per-component version matrix with patch identifiers, and payload generators for Yaklang and Python.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill ghost-bits-cast-attack -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ghost-bits-cast-attack/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ghost-bits-cast-attack/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill ghost-bits-cast-attack -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ghost-bits-cast-attack/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill ghost-bits-cast-attack -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ghost-bits-cast-attack/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install yaklang/hack-skills ghost-bits-cast-attack
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ghost-bits-cast-attack/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill ghost-bits-cast-attack -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/yaklang/hack-skills --path skills/ghost-bits-cast-attack
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ghost-bits-cast-attack/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill ghost-bits-cast-attack -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/yaklang/hack-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/ghost-bits-cast-attack/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- bypass a WAF in front of a Java backend when the literal payload is blocked
- hide SQL keywords inside Unicode escapes for Jackson
- push a webshell upload through Tomcat `filename*`
- inject CRLF into headers via Apache HttpClient
- re-enable a patched CVE by dodging signatures

## Example prompts
- Check this Java endpoint for Ghost Bits: the WAF blocks my SQLi payload, try char-to-byte narrowing variants
- Build a Tomcat `filename*` webshell upload payload using Ghost Bits
- Java backend plus WAF, deserialization is blocked — run the ghost-bits-cast-attack variants

# SKILL: Ghost Bits / Cast Attack — Java char to byte Narrowing Playbook

> **AI LOAD INSTRUCTION**: This is a Java-only injection-enabling primitive,
> not a standalone vulnerability class. Whenever you see (1) a Java backend,

> root cause is the silent loss of the high 8 bits when Java code narrows a

## 0. RELATED ROUTING

Ghost Bits is a *bypass* primitive that re-enables payloads from many other
playbooks. Pair it with whichever attack family applies:

- [waf-bypass-techniques](../waf-bypass-techniques/SKILL.md) — when a Java
  backend is suspected and WAF rules block the literal payload, this is the
  first technique to try beyond classic encoding.
- [deserialization-insecure](../deserialization-insecure/SKILL.md) — for
  Apache Commons BCEL ClassLoader and Fastjson `\u`/`\x` escape variants.
- [path-traversal-lfi](../path-traversal-lfi/SKILL.md) — Spring, Jetty,
  Undertow, Vert.x URL decoding and `%2>` hex folding.
- [upload-insecure-files](../upload-insecure-files/SKILL.md) — Tomcat
  `RFC2231Utility` `filename*` Webshell upload.
