## What it does

The skill instructs your coding assistant to write copy according to Sentry style guides. By default, it enforces Plain Speech: concise, direct copy using active verbs without filler words or technical jargon. Button labels are capped at two to three words, and robotic passive structures get stripped out automatically.

When working on empty states, 404 pages, or onboarding, the skill switches to Sentry Voice. This tone introduces empathetic, self-aware humor aimed at software glitches rather than the user. The skill strictly bans playful voice in billing flows, error dialogs, and settings where clarity is essential.

It also enforces American English spelling, Title Case for headers, sentence case for buttons, and strict punctuation rules such as omitting exclamation marks and ending periods in buttons.

## Requirements
- Works with: Sentry

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/skills --skill brand-guidelines -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/brand-guidelines/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/brand-guidelines/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/skills --skill brand-guidelines -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/brand-guidelines/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/skills --skill brand-guidelines -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/brand-guidelines/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install getsentry/skills brand-guidelines
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/brand-guidelines/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/skills --skill brand-guidelines -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/getsentry/skills --path skills/brand-guidelines
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/brand-guidelines/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getsentry/skills --skill brand-guidelines -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/getsentry/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/brand-guidelines/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- Write direct action-oriented labels for buttons and dialogs
- Format clear error messages that explain the issue and the next step
- Craft empathetic empty states and 404 pages using Sentry Voice
- Remove robotic phrasing and passive voice from product UI

## Example prompts
- Write an empty state message for an empty issue stream using Sentry guidelines
- Rewrite this error dialog copy using Plain Speech rules
- Generate button labels and confirmation text for a project deletion modal

# Brand Guidelines

Write user-facing copy following Sentry's brand guidelines.

## Tone Selection

Choose the appropriate tone based on context:

| Use Plain Speech | Use Sentry Voice |
|------------------|------------------|
| Product UI (buttons, labels, forms) | 404 pages |
| Documentation | Empty states |
| Error messages | Onboarding flows |
| Settings pages | Loading states |
| Transactional emails | "What's New" announcements |
| Help text | Marketing copy |

**Default to Plain Speech** unless the context specifically calls for personality.

## Plain Speech (Default)

Plain Speech is clear, direct, and functional. Use it for most UI elements.

### Rules

1. **Be concise** - Use the fewest words needed
2. **Be direct** - Tell users what to do, not what they can do
3. **Use active voice** - "Save your changes" not "Your changes will be saved"
4. **Avoid jargon** - Use simple words users understand
5. **Be specific** - "3 errors found" not "Some errors found"

### Examples

| Instead of | Write |
|------------|-------|
| "Click here to save your changes" | "Save" |
| "You can filter results by date" | "Filter by date" |
| "An error has occurred" | "Something went wrong" |
| "Please enter a valid email address" | "Enter a valid email" |
| "Are you sure you want to delete?" | "Delete this item?" |

## Sentry Voice

Sentry Voice adds personality in appropriate moments. It's empathetic, self-aware, and occasionally snarky.

### Principles

1. **Empathetic snark** - Direct frustration at the situation, never the user
2. **Self-aware** - Acknowledge the absurdity of software
3. **Fun but functional** - Personality should enhance, not obscure meaning
4. **Earned moments** - Only use when users have time to appreciate it

### Examples

**404 Pages:**
> "This page doesn't exist. Maybe it never did. Maybe it was a dream. Either way, let's get you back on track."

**Empty States:**
> "No errors yet. Enjoy this moment of peace while it lasts."

**Onboarding:**
> "Let's get your first error. Don't worry, it's not as scary as it sounds."

**Loading States:**
> "Crunching the numbers..."
> "Fetching your data..."

### When NOT to Use Sentry Voice

- Error messages (users are frustrated)
- Settings pages (users are focused)
- Documentation (users need information)
- Billing/payment flows (users need trust)

## General Rules

### Spelling and Grammar

- Use **American English** spelling (color, not colour)
- Use **Title Case** for headings and page titles
- Use **Sentence case** for body text, buttons, and labels

### Punctuation
```
