## What it does

The skill teaches the agent six Gestalt principles for interface work: proximity, similarity, common region, connectedness, figure/ground and continuity. It then applies them to your code — grouping related buttons, pushing unrelated blocks apart with whitespace, aligning controls along one axis.

Proximity gets the most attention. The advice is to group with spacing rather than divider lines, since lines add noise without carrying information. There is a caveat: drop a line and you have to add air, or the groups collapse into each other. The further apart elements sit, the more a separator earns its place — a compact table reads fine without rules, the same table at full width needs row lines or zebra striping.

The skill also watches the click-to-result link. Content should appear next to the click instead of across the screen, and behave the same way in every view. It picks up `**/*.tsx`, `**/*.jsx`, `**/*.vue`, `**/*.svelte` files and the `components/**`, `design-system/**`, `ui/**` directories.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill gestalt-ui-organisation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/gestalt-ui-organisation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/gestalt-ui-organisation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill gestalt-ui-organisation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/gestalt-ui-organisation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill gestalt-ui-organisation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/gestalt-ui-organisation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dembrandt/dembrandt-skills gestalt-ui-organisation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/gestalt-ui-organisation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill gestalt-ui-organisation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --path skills/gestalt-ui-organisation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/gestalt-ui-organisation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill gestalt-ui-organisation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- group toolbar buttons so the relationship reads without dividers
- separate unrelated form blocks with whitespace
- strip redundant divider lines and add spacing in their place
- align controls along one axis inside a logical group
- anchor content to the click point in navigation layouts

## Example prompts
- group these buttons so users know they're related
- make it clearer which commands belong together
- organise this toolbar using gestalt

# Gestalt UI Organisation

UI should be organised so that the visual structure communicates relationships — which commands, controls, and elements belong together — without requiring users to read labels or documentation.

## Core Gestalt Principles for UI Layout

### 1. Proximity
Elements that are close together are perceived as a group.

- Place related controls (e.g. Bold / Italic / Underline) close together with minimal gap between them
- Separate unrelated groups with larger whitespace
- Do not use lines or borders as the primary grouping mechanism — proximity alone should convey the relationship

**Example:** A toolbar with `[Cut] [Copy] [Paste]` grouped tightly, then a wider gap before `[Undo] [Redo]`, communicates two distinct command groups without any visual divider.

#### Prefer whitespace over separator lines
Default to **whitespace, not divider lines**, for grouping. Most separators do work that spacing does better — they add noise and a "boxed-in" feel without adding information. Remove the majority and let proximity carry the grouping.

Caveat: a line takes almost no space, so removing it leaves groups too close. **Removing separators usually means adding spacing** — budget the whitespace (occasionally a subtle background or heading) rather than just deleting the line and leaving the layout cramped.

#### The need for a separator grows with distance
