## What it does

The skill guides the assistant through geospatial operations using PostGIS, GDAL CLI tools, and npm packages. It structures schemas with the `GEOGRAPHY(POINT, 4326)` type, sets up GiST spatial indexes, and writes queries with `ST_DWithin` to avoid full-table scans on millions of points.

Coordinate management follows strict projection rules. Datasets remain in EPSG:4326 (WGS84) in storage and transform to Web Mercator (EPSG:3857) only when rendering map tiles. This separation avoids distorted distance measurements across mismatched projections.

If your task is simple address validation, raw Haversine math, or static map embedding, this tool is an overkill and explicitly outside its scope.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill geospatial-data-pipeline -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/geospatial-data-pipeline/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/geospatial-data-pipeline/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill geospatial-data-pipeline -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/geospatial-data-pipeline/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill geospatial-data-pipeline -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/geospatial-data-pipeline/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install curiositech/some_claude_skills geospatial-data-pipeline
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/geospatial-data-pipeline/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill geospatial-data-pipeline -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/curiositech/some_claude_skills --path .claude/skills/geospatial-data-pipeline
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/geospatial-data-pipeline/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add curiositech/some_claude_skills --skill geospatial-data-pipeline -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- configure GiST spatial indexes in PostGIS for proximity searches
- transform coordinates between EPSG:4326 and EPSG:3857 correctly
- optimize GeoJSON payloads and structures for web maps
- process and annotate drone survey imagery and GPS track logs

## Example prompts
- Create a PostGIS schema for drone survey waypoints with a GiST spatial index
- Write a SQL query that transforms coordinates from WGS84 to Web Mercator for tile generation
- Optimize our spatial query to return nearby assets within 5km without pulling the entire dataset

# Geospatial Data Pipeline

Expert in processing, optimizing, and visualizing geospatial data at scale.

## When to Use

✅ **Use for**:
- Drone imagery processing and annotation
- GPS track analysis and visualization
- Location-based search (find nearby X)
- Map tile generation for web/mobile
- Coordinate system transformations
- Geofencing and spatial queries
- GeoJSON optimization for web

❌ **NOT for**:
- Simple address validation (use address APIs)
- Basic distance calculations (use Haversine formula)
- Static map embeds (use Mapbox Static API)
- Geocoding (use Nominatim or Google Geocoding API)

## Technology Selection

### Database: PostGIS vs MongoDB Geospatial

| Feature | PostGIS | MongoDB |
|---------|---------|---------|
| Spatial indexes | GiST, SP-GiST | 2dsphere |
| Query language | SQL + spatial functions | Aggregation pipeline |
| Geometry types | 20+ (full OGC support) | Basic (Point, Line, Polygon) |
| Coordinate systems | 6000+ via EPSG | WGS84 only |
| Performance (10M points) | <100ms | <200ms |
| Best for | Complex spatial analysis | Document-centric apps |

**Timeline**:
- 2005: PostGIS 1.0 released
- 2012: MongoDB adds geospatial indexes
- 2020: PostGIS 3.0 with improved performance
- 2024: PostGIS remains gold standard for GIS workloads

## Common Anti-Patterns

### Anti-Pattern 1: Storing Coordinates as Strings

**Novice thinking**: "I'll just store lat/lon as text, it's simple"

**Problem**: Can't use spatial indexes, queries are slow, no validation.

**Wrong approach**:
