## What it does

The skill enforces an inventory-first workflow: catalogue every clue in the frame before running any search. Clues are ranked by how much of the world they eliminate. Tier-one markers like phone numbers, native script, and business names take precedence over vague landscape features like distant hills.

When names are missing, the methodology queries OpenStreetMap geometry through Overpass code snippets—locating clusters like a water tower near a soccer pitch. It instructs the agent to verify locations against satellite and street-level imagery, matching strictly against invariant structures such as rooflines and curb angles. Three independent features must align before a location is confirmed.

For chronolocation, the guide uses SunCalc for shadow geometry alongside seasonal vegetation and historical weather archives. It points researchers toward regional platforms when Google coverage falls short, highlighting Yandex Panoramas for Central Asia and Mapillary for crowdsourced rural tracks.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add UseOSINT/Skills --skill geolocate-from-pixels -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/geolocate-from-pixels/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/geolocate-from-pixels/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add UseOSINT/Skills --skill geolocate-from-pixels -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/geolocate-from-pixels/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add UseOSINT/Skills --skill geolocate-from-pixels -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/geolocate-from-pixels/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install UseOSINT/Skills geolocate-from-pixels
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/geolocate-from-pixels/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add UseOSINT/Skills --skill geolocate-from-pixels -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/UseOSINT/Skills --path skills/geolocate-from-pixels
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/geolocate-from-pixels/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add UseOSINT/Skills --skill geolocate-from-pixels -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/UseOSINT/Skills/tree/HEAD/skills/geolocate-from-pixels/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pinpoint image coordinates without EXIF metadata or GPS logs
- estimate capture time and date using shadow lengths and SunCalc
- generate Overpass API queries to isolate landmarks by geometric layout
- verify contested visual claims in OSINT, journalism, or insurance audits

## Example prompts
- Inventory every clue in this street photo and rank them by tier before searching
- Calculate the approximate time of day for this scene based on shadow angles and SunCalc
- Draft an Overpass query to find a soccer pitch within 400 meters of a water tower in Romania

# Geolocate from pixels

Every photograph taken outdoors contains enough information to place it. The
constraint is never the image; it is your patience and your reference knowledge.

The beginner mistake is searching before inventorying. People see a mountain,
type "mountain with two peaks" into a search box, and get nothing. The method is
the opposite: extract every clue first, rank them by how much of the planet each
one eliminates, and only then start searching — because the clue that pins the
country is usually not the one your eye went to.

## Rank your clues before you search

Work down this list. Each row eliminates far more of the world than the one below
it, so a single row-one clue is worth twenty row-six clues.

| Tier | Clue | What it buys you |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Readable proper nouns — business names, street names, municipal logos, school names | Often an instant pin. A business name plus a country is a map query, not an investigation. |
| 1 | Phone numbers on signage and vehicles | Country and frequently city, from prefix and digit-grouping convention. |
| 1 | Language *and script*, then orthography | Script narrows to a family; specific diacritics, letter forms and spelling conventions narrow to one country and sometimes one region. |
| 2 | Licence plate format — shape, colour, band, character layout | Country, often issuing region. Visible from a long way off, survives compression. |
| 2 | Driving side | Splits the world roughly a third to two thirds. Read it from parked-car steering wheels, not just from traffic. |
| 2 | Road markings — centre-line colour, dash rhythm, edge lines | Yellow versus white centre lines alone cuts most of the world. |
| 3 | Utility pole construction and insulator style | Regionally conservative and rarely changed. One of the most reliable tells in the frame. |
```
