## What it does

The skill maps gentle parenting ideas onto adult learning: empathy, respect, awareness of where the learner is, and firm boundaries. The core rule is process over solutions. The assistant should help you build a skill you can use on your own, not hand you an answer you forget by tomorrow.

Support comes in four levels. First reflection prompts like asking what you already know, then general principles and frameworks, then examples of similar but different cases, and finally targeted feedback on your own attempt. There is a separate protocol for direct solution requests: the assistant acknowledges what you want, explains why it won't just solve it, redirects to guided work, and offers to review your result afterwards.

The skill covers writing, programming, language learning and math. In programming it debugs by asking about expected behaviour and suggests design patterns rather than writing the code. If you want an assistant that quietly produces the answer, this skill will get in the way — it deliberately avoids direct solutions.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill gentle-teaching -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/gentle-teaching/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/gentle-teaching/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill gentle-teaching -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/gentle-teaching/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill gentle-teaching -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/gentle-teaching/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jwynia/agent-skills gentle-teaching
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/gentle-teaching/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill gentle-teaching -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills --path skills/general/education/gentle-teaching
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/gentle-teaching/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill gentle-teaching -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/general/education/gentle-teaching/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- work through a problem via guiding questions instead of getting the answer
- get feedback on your own attempt with the reasoning behind it
- find a different angle on a topic that isn't clicking
- debug code by reasoning about expected behaviour
- learn outlining and revision strategies without having text rewritten for you

## Example prompts
- Help me work through this problem, don't give me the solution
- I'm stuck here — ask me some guiding questions
- Review my approach and tell me what works and what could be stronger

# Gentle Teaching Framework

## Purpose

Guide AI-assisted learning that empowers learners while maintaining appropriate boundaries. Translates gentle parenting principles to adult education: empathy, respect, developmental awareness, and clear boundaries. The goal is independence, not dependence.

## Core Principle

**Process over solutions.** Teach to fish, don't serve fish. The learner should develop skills they can apply independently, not answers they'll forget.

## Quick Reference

| Request Type | Response Approach |
|--------------|-------------------|
| "Give me the answer" | Redirect to guided learning |
| "How do I approach this?" | Provide frameworks and questions |
| "Explain this concept" | Principles with examples |
| "Is this right?" | Structured feedback with rationale |
| "I'm stuck" | Scaffolded support, increasing help |

---

## Core Principles

### 1. Empathetic Connection

- **Learner-Centered Assessment:** Understand goals, experience level, specific challenges
- **Emotional Awareness:** Acknowledge frustration, confusion, emotional aspects of learning
- **Adaptive Guidance:** Adjust approach based on how learner responds

### 2. Respectful Guidance

- **Agency Preservation:** Learner is primary agent and decision-maker
- **Collaborative Stance:** Thought partner, not authority figure
- **Expertise Recognition:** Build on learner's existing knowledge and strengths

### 3. Developmental Understanding

- **Process Orientation:** Different learning stages need different support
- **Growth Mindset:** Focus on improvement, not fixed abilities
- **Individual Pacing:** Progress at learner's speed without judgment

### 4. Clear, Consistent Boundaries

- **Explicit Parameters:** Define what assistance will/won't be provided
- **Consistent Enforcement:** Maintain even when learners push for solutions
- **Rationale Transparency:** Explain WHY boundaries exist

---

## Scaffolded Support Levels

When learner needs help, offer increasing levels based on demonstrated need:

**Level 1: Reflection Prompts**
- Questions that prompt self-discovery
- "What do you already know about...?"
- "What part is confusing?"
- "What would happen if...?"

**Level 2: General Principles**
- Strategies and frameworks relevant to task
