## What it does

The skill covers visibility inside AI assistant answers. It compares GEO and SEO by goal, user path and metrics, then tables the platforms with the source each one pulls from, and explains the RAG flow: retrieval first, answer generation second.

Crawlers get their own section. Training crawlers and index crawlers behave differently, and that distinction matters: blocking a training crawler in `robots.txt` does not stop the same provider from fetching your page in real time. Index crawlers have to be allowed, otherwise there is nothing to cite. There is also a table of retrieval supply types — self-built index, bound search engine, third-party API, hybrid.

The skill hands off rather than swallowing everything: third-party publishing goes to `parasite-seo`, GitHub work to `github`, Medium to `medium-posts`, classic Google SERP strategy to `seo-strategy`. Worth installing if you publish content and want to know why some pages end up in answers and others never do.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitHub

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill generative-engine-optimization -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill geo -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/geo/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/geo/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill geo -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/geo/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill geo -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/geo/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install kostja94/marketing-skills geo
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/geo/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill geo -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/kostja94/marketing-skills --path skills/strategies/commercial/geo
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/geo/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill geo -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/kostja94/marketing-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/strategies/commercial/geo/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- tell GEO apart from classic SEO by goal and metrics
- pick which platforms to optimize content for first
- decide which AI crawlers to allow and which to block
- write paragraphs an AI assistant will actually quote
- connect GEO work to SERP features and zero-click results

## Example prompts
- work out a GEO strategy for our blog — which platforms will get us cited
- why do our pages never show up in AI Overviews, and what should we fix
- check which AI crawlers we block in robots.txt and whether that hurts citation

# Strategies: GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

Guides GEO/AEO strategy for AI search visibility. GEO optimizes content for ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and AI search summaries (Google AI Overviews, Bing Copilot, Yandex Search with AI)—getting cited in AI-generated answers rather than ranking in traditional SERPs. See **serp-features** for AI search as SERP features; **featured-snippet** for snippet optimization that overlaps with AI Overviews.

**When invoking**: On **first use**, if helpful, open with 1-2 sentences on what this skill covers and why it matters, then provide the main output. On **subsequent use** or when the user asks to skip, go directly to the main output.

## Scope

- **GEO** = Generative Engine Optimization
- **AEO** = Answer Engine Optimization
- **LLMO** = Large Language Model Optimization
- **AIO** = Artificial Intelligence Optimization

All refer to the same goal: visibility in AI assistant responses.

## GEO vs. SEO

| Dimension | SEO | GEO |
|-----------|-----|-----|
| **Goal** | Rankings in search results | Citations in AI answers |
| **User path** | Click → visit → convert | Answer in-place; may not visit |
| **Content** | Full page optimization | Clear, citable paragraphs |
| **Metrics** | Clicks, traffic | Citations, brand mentions |
| **Platforms** | Google, Bing, Yandex (organic) | AI Overviews, Copilot, Yandex AI, ChatGPT, Perplexity |

**Both matter**: Create content that ranks and gets cited. AI search summaries (AI Overviews, Copilot, Yandex AI) are **SERP features**—see **serp-features**. When SERP features cause **zero-click** (user gets answer without clicking), citation becomes the primary value; optimize for being cited, not just ranked.
