## What it does

The skill runs a four-step pipeline. Step one pulls colours, typography, spacing and component styles, either through the Dembrandt MCP tools or with `npx dembrandt <url> --design-md --crawl 3`. An existing `DESIGN.md` skips extraction and gets parsed as is.

Raw values are not used directly. The skill maps them onto semantic roles such as `color-primary`, `color-surface` and `color-error`, and it ships decision rules for the messy cases: when several brand colours compete for the primary role, the one used most on interactive elements wins. Body text below 16px is overridden to 16px.

Step three settles hierarchy, grouping and contrast. The WCAG 2.2 AA check wants at least 4.5:1 for text on surface and for a button label on the primary colour; failing tokens get adjusted and the change is documented. One catch worth knowing up front: if orange is the brand's primary colour, it cannot double as the warning state, so a separate amber has to be defined. Output is a CSS token file plus a component spec. The skill needs `dembrandt>=0.23.1`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill generate-ui-from-brand -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/generate-ui-from-brand/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/generate-ui-from-brand/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill generate-ui-from-brand -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/generate-ui-from-brand/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill generate-ui-from-brand -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/generate-ui-from-brand/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dembrandt/dembrandt-skills generate-ui-from-brand
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/generate-ui-from-brand/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill generate-ui-from-brand -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --path skills/generate-ui-from-brand
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/generate-ui-from-brand/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill generate-ui-from-brand -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/dembrandt/dembrandt-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/generate-ui-from-brand/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a UI that matches an existing brand from its site
- turn a `DESIGN.md` into semantic tokens and component structure
- run a contrast check and fix tokens that fail WCAG
- audit a design system and decide what to fix first
- keep tokens consistent across several brands

## Example prompts
- build a UI that matches this brand: <url>
- I have a `DESIGN.md` — turn it into tokens and a component structure
- audit this palette for contrast and tell me what to change

**Output:** Actionable UI spec with decisions made

## Step 1 — Extract

**If a URL is provided and Dembrandt MCP is available:**

All MCP extraction tools are async — they return a `job_id` immediately. Poll `get_job_status` until `status` is `"completed"`, then read `result`.

```
{ job_id } = get_design_tokens({ url })
{ result } = get_job_status({ job_id })   // repeat until status === "completed"
```

Run these in sequence (each extraction launches a browser):
```
get_design_tokens, get_color_palette, get_typography, get_component_styles, get_spacing
```

**If Dembrandt MCP is not available, run CLI:**
```bash
````
