# generate-testability-wrappers

A skill that writes wrappers and DI registration for static C# dependencies no test can replace, or moves the code onto built-in abstractions.

## What it does

The skill writes wrapper interfaces, default implementations and DI registration for static dependencies in C# that block testing. Where .NET already ships an abstraction it points there instead of adding a layer: `TimeProvider` on .NET 8+, the `Microsoft.Bcl.TimeProvider` package on .NET 6–7, `System.IO.Abstractions` for files, `IHttpClientFactory` for HTTP. Environment, Console and Process get small custom interfaces such as `IEnvironmentProvider`, `IConsole` and `IProcessRunner` — only the members your code actually calls.

You supply the static category and the `TargetFramework` from the `.csproj`. That pair decides which abstraction exists at all: .NET Framework has no built-in `TimeProvider`, so the skill falls back to its own `ISystemClock`. Worth checking your target before you run it. Composition comes next: an instantiable class gets constructor injection, a container gets a registration that compiles, a public static API keeps its signatures through an ambient seam.

Tests ship with the code: `FakeTimeProvider` from `Microsoft.Extensions.TimeProvider.Testing`, a fake `HttpMessageHandler` for typed clients. Finding statics and rewriting call sites belong to other skills, `detect-static-dependencies` and `migrate-static-to-wrapper`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill generate-testability-wrappers -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/generate-testability-wrappers/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/generate-testability-wrappers/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill generate-testability-wrappers -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/generate-testability-wrappers/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill generate-testability-wrappers -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/generate-testability-wrappers/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dotnet/skills generate-testability-wrappers
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/generate-testability-wrappers/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill generate-testability-wrappers -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dotnet/skills --path plugins/dotnet-test/skills/generate-testability-wrappers
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/generate-testability-wrappers/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill generate-testability-wrappers -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- Swap `DateTime.UtcNow` for `TimeProvider` and prove it with a `FakeTimeProvider` test
- Wrap `Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable` in a minimal interface
- Generate `IProcessRunner` together with its DI registration
- Move file access onto `System.IO.Abstractions`
- Register a typed `HttpClient` and test it without hitting the network

## Example prompts
- Move `DateTime.UtcNow` in `OrderProcessor` onto `TimeProvider`, add the registration and a `FakeTimeProvider` test. The project targets .NET 8
- Wrap `Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable` in an interface, only the members already in use. It builds on .NET Framework
- Generate `IProcessRunner` for `Process.Start` and wire it into the existing `IServiceCollection`

# Generate Testability Wrappers

Generate wrapper interfaces, default implementations, and DI service registration code for untestable static dependencies. For statics that already have .NET built-in abstractions (`TimeProvider`, `IHttpClientFactory`), guide adoption of the built-in. For statics without built-in alternatives, generate custom minimal wrappers.

## When to Use

- After running `detect-static-dependencies` and identifying which statics to wrap
- When the user asks to make a class testable by replacing statics with injected abstractions
- When adopting `TimeProvider` (.NET 8+) or `System.IO.Abstractions`
- When creating a custom wrapper for `Environment.*`, `Console.*`, or `Process.*`
- When a released static API needs an ambient seam because signatures cannot change

## When Not to Use

- The user wants to find statics first (use `detect-static-dependencies`)
- The user wants to bulk-replace call sites (use `migrate-static-to-wrapper`)
- The static is already behind an interface

If the target already consumes an injected interface or built-in abstraction, stop:
do not add a second wrapper, project, registration, or test around that seam.
