## What it does

The skill queries Gemini to run broad academic literature searches. Instead of relying on exact keyword matching, it decomposes the prompt into sub-problems, naming variants, and neighboring benchmarks. Each result includes the title, author list, venue, DOI, arXiv identifier, and code links.

Execution defaults to the mcp__gemini-cli__ask-gemini MCP tool with the auto-gemini-3 model. When MCP is unreachable or fails, the skill runs gemini-cli directly with a 120-second timeout. That fallback prevents failed queries. By default, it targets 15 papers published from 2022 onward.

Running this skill requires Node.js v16.0.0+, an authenticated gemini-cli installation, and a GEMINI_API_KEY set in .claude/.env. Connecting via MCP also needs gemini-mcp-tool. On Google One AI Pro accounts where Gemini 3 limits are hit, requests automatically drop down to gemini-2.5-pro.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill gemini-search -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/gemini-search/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/gemini-search/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill gemini-search -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/gemini-search/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill gemini-search -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/gemini-search/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep gemini-search
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/gemini-search/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill gemini-search -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --path skills/gemini-search
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/gemini-search/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill gemini-search -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep/tree/HEAD/skills/gemini-search/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- Discover academic literature across topic variants and aliases
- Filter papers to those with public source code repositories
- Restrict search results to target conferences like NeurIPS or ICML
- Collect structured metadata including DOIs, arXiv IDs, and summaries

## Example prompts
- /gemini-search "diffusion models for robotics" — code-only
- /gemini-search "graph neural networks" — venues: NeurIPS,ICML — year: 2020-
- /gemini-search "efficient attention mechanisms" — max: 20

# Gemini Literature Search

Search query: $ARGUMENTS

## Role & Positioning

This skill uses Gemini as a **broad literature discovery** source:

| Skill | Source | Best for |
|-------|--------|----------|
| `/arxiv` | arXiv API | Latest preprints, cutting-edge unrefereed work |
| `/semantic-scholar` | Semantic Scholar API | Published venue papers (IEEE, ACM, Springer) with citation counts |
| `/deepxiv` | DeepXiv CLI | Layered reading: search, brief, section map, section reads |
| `/exa-search` | Exa API | Broad web search: blogs, docs, news, companies, research papers |
| `/gemini-search` | Gemini MCP / CLI | **AI-powered broad literature discovery** — searches across multiple angles, aliases, and sub-problems |

Use Gemini when you want AI-driven discovery that goes beyond keyword matching — Gemini decomposes topics into sub-problems, explores naming variants, and surfaces papers that traditional API searches may miss.

## Constants

- **MAX_RESULTS = 15** — Target number of papers Gemini should find.
- **MIN_YEAR = 2022** — Default minimum publication year. Override with `— year: 2020-`.
- **DEFAULT_MODEL = auto-gemini-3** — Auto-routes within the Gemini 3 family (Pro / Flash) by server-side capacity. Required by `mcp__gemini-cli__ask-gemini` and `gemini-cli` v0.40+; explicit `gemini-3-pro-preview` is **silently downgraded to `gemini-2.5-pro`** on OAuth-personal / Google One AI Pro accounts when capacity is exhausted. Override with `— model: gemini-3-flash-preview` (Gemini 3 Flash explicit, faster, higher quota), or `— model: gemini-2.5-pro` / `gemini-2.5-flash` (legacy, only for users on older `gemini-cli` < v0.40). The MCP tool accepts all of these verbatim.

> Overrides (append to arguments):
> - `/gemini-search "topic" — max: 20` — request up to 20 papers
> - `/gemini-search "topic" — year: 2020-` — papers from 2020 onward
> - `/gemini-search "topic" — code-only` — only papers with open-source code
> - `/gemini-search "topic" — venues: NeurIPS,ICML,ICLR` — focus on specific venues
> - `/gemini-search "topic" — model: gemini-3-flash-preview` — Gemini 3 Flash (faster, higher quota, less capable than Pro)
> - `/gemini-search "topic" — model: auto-gemini-3` — auto-routes within the Gemini 3 family by load
```
