## What it does

The skill walks through the whole GKE path: Standard and Autopilot clusters, separate node pools for memory-heavy, GPU and spot workloads, and binding a Kubernetes service account to a Google service account with Workload Identity. Commands are ready to copy, including `gcloud container clusters create` and `gcloud container node-pools create` with autoscaling, autorepair and release channel flags.

Deployment manifests are covered too: a Deployment with readiness and liveness probes, topologySpreadConstraints across zones, a Service, and an Ingress with a ManagedCertificate. A Terraform section describes `google_container_cluster` with private nodes and managed Prometheus.

You need the Google Cloud SDK (`gcloud`) and `kubectl` installed, the Kubernetes Engine and Compute Engine APIs enabled, and the `roles/container.admin` role. Without that role, cluster creation commands fail. The Standard versus Autopilot table notes that DaemonSets are restricted in Autopilot, so check your DaemonSet manifests before moving over.

## Requirements
- Works with: Kubernetes

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill gcp-gke -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/gcp-gke/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/gcp-gke/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill gcp-gke -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/gcp-gke/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill gcp-gke -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/gcp-gke/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills gcp-gke
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/gcp-gke/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill gcp-gke -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path infrastructure/cloud-gcp/gcp-gke
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/gcp-gke/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill gcp-gke -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- spin up a GKE cluster with node autoscaling and autorepair
- add a GPU pool or a memory-heavy pool with a taint
- bind a Kubernetes service account to a Google service account
- set up an Ingress with a managed SSL certificate
- describe a cluster and node pool in Terraform

## Example prompts
- create a Standard GKE cluster in us-central1 with autoscaling from 1 to 5 nodes
- add a spot pool for batch jobs to the prod-cluster
- set up Workload Identity for the app-ksa service account in the myapp namespace

# Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE)

Deploy, operate, and scale managed Kubernetes clusters on Google Cloud Platform.

## When to Use

- Running containerized microservices at scale with automatic scaling and healing
- Workloads requiring fine-grained orchestration, service mesh, or custom scheduling
- Teams already invested in Kubernetes tooling (Helm, Argo CD, Flux)
- When Cloud Run's request-based model does not fit (long-running, stateful workloads)

## Prerequisites

- Google Cloud SDK (`gcloud`) and `kubectl` installed
- APIs enabled: Kubernetes Engine, Compute Engine
- IAM role `roles/container.admin` for cluster management

```bash
gcloud services enable container.googleapis.com compute.googleapis.com
gcloud components install kubectl
```

## Standard vs Autopilot

| Feature | Standard | Autopilot |
|---------|----------|-----------|
| Node management | You manage node pools | Google manages nodes |
| Pricing | Pay per node (VM) | Pay per pod resource request |
| GPU/TPU | Full support | Supported (with limits) |
| DaemonSets | Allowed | Restricted |
| Best for | Full control, specialized HW | Hands-off, cost-optimized |

## Create a Standard Cluster

```bash
gcloud container clusters create prod-cluster \
  --region=us-central1 --num-nodes=2 \
  --machine-type=e2-standard-4 --disk-size=100 \
  --enable-autoscaling --min-nodes=1 --max-nodes=5 \
  --enable-autorepair --enable-autoupgrade \
  --release-channel=regular \
  --workload-pool=${PROJECT_ID}.svc.id.goog \
  --enable-ip-alias --enable-network-policy \
  --enable-shielded-nodes \
  --logging=SYSTEM,WORKLOAD --monitoring=SYSTEM,WORKLOAD \
  --labels=env=production,team=platform
gcloud container clusters get-credentials prod-cluster --region=us-central1
```

## Create an Autopilot Cluster

```bash
gcloud container clusters create-auto autopilot-prod \
  --region=us-central1 --release-channel=regular \
  --workload-pool=${PROJECT_ID}.svc.id.goog \
  --network=my-vpc --subnetwork=gke-subnet
```

## Node Pools

```bash
# High-memory pool with taint
gcloud container node-pools create highmem-pool \
  --cluster=prod-cluster --region=us-central1 \
  --machine-type=n2-highmem-8 --disk-size=200 --disk-type=pd-ssd \
  --num-nodes=1 --enable-autoscaling --min-nodes=0 --max-nodes=4 \
  --node-labels=workload=memory-intensive \
