## What it does

The skill gives your agent a frame for Google Cloud work. It covers Cloud Functions (2nd generation, memory and timeout limits, error handling), Cloud Run (minimal base images, health checks, graceful SIGTERM shutdown), Firestore (collections shaped around query patterns, transactions, composite indexes), BigQuery (partitioning, clustering, parameterized queries) and Cloud Storage.

A separate section handles Terraform: the `infrastructure/` layout with `main.tf`, `variables.tf`, `outputs.tf`, `versions.tf` and modules, the `hashicorp/google` provider pinned at `~> 5.0`, and state stored in GCS. Code samples are TypeScript for Cloud Functions, Firestore and Secret Manager, plus a distroless Dockerfile and a `cloudbuild.yaml` pipeline.

Security guidance is IAM with minimal permissions, Workload Identity and VPC Service Controls. One thing to know: the skill hands you recommendations, not working infrastructure — you still create the Terraform state bucket, service accounts and buckets yourself. Several samples assume Node.js 20 and the Google client libraries.

## Requirements
- Works with: Terraform

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill gcp-development -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/gcp-development/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/gcp-development/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill gcp-development -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/gcp-development/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill gcp-development -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/gcp-development/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Mindrally/skills gcp-development
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/gcp-development/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill gcp-development -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Mindrally/skills --path gcp-development
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/gcp-development/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill gcp-development -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Mindrally/skills/tree/HEAD/gcp-development/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write a Cloud Function with request validation and error handling
- build a distroless Dockerfile for Cloud Run
- design Firestore collections around actual query patterns
- split Terraform into modules with state in GCS
- set up Cloud Build to build and push an image

## Example prompts
- Write a TypeScript Cloud Function that validates the method and logs errors
- Split my project infrastructure into Terraform modules with a GCS backend
- Check my BigQuery query for partitioning and parameterization

# GCP Development Best Practices

## Overview

This skill provides comprehensive guidelines for developing applications on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), covering serverless computing, data services, Infrastructure as Code with Terraform, and security best practices.

## Core Principles

- Write clean, well-structured code using GCP client libraries
- Use Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) for all infrastructure management
- Follow Google Cloud security best practices and compliance guidelines
- Implement comprehensive logging with Cloud Logging and monitoring with Cloud Monitoring

## Code Organization and Structure

### Terraform Module Structure
```
infrastructure/
├── main.tf           # Primary resources
├── variables.tf      # Input variables
├── outputs.tf        # Output values
├── versions.tf       # Provider versions
├── terraform.tfvars  # Variable values
└── modules/
    ├── compute/
    ├── storage/
    └── networking/
```

### Application Structure
```
src/
├── functions/        # Cloud Functions
├── services/         # Cloud Run services
├── shared/           # Shared utilities
└── tests/            # Test files
```

## Cloud Functions Guidelines

### Function Configuration
```typescript
import { HttpFunction } from '@google-cloud/functions-framework';
export const helloWorld: HttpFunction = async (req, res) => {
  try {
    // Validate request
    if (req.method !== 'POST') {
      res.status(405).send('Method Not Allowed');
      return;
    }
    // Business logic
    const result = await processRequest(req.body);
    res.status(200).json(result);
  } catch (error) {
    console.error('Function error:', error);
    res.status(500).json({ error: 'Internal Server Error' });
  }
};
```

### Best Practices
- Use 2nd generation Cloud Functions for better performance
- Set appropriate memory and timeout limits
- Use environment variables for configuration
- Implement proper error handling and logging
- Use connection pooling for database connections

## Cloud Run Guidelines

### Container Best Practices
- Use distroless or minimal base images
- Implement health check endpoints
- Handle SIGTERM for graceful shutdown
- Use Cloud Run services for HTTP workloads
- Use Cloud Run jobs for batch processing

### Dockerfile Example
```dockerfile
