## What it does

The skill covers the four GCP audit log types and which ones you actually have to enable. Admin activity, system event and policy denied logs are always on and cannot be turned off. Data access logs are the exception — you enable them yourself, and they can get expensive at high volume, so it is worth deciding per service rather than flipping them on everywhere.

From there it hands you the commands. IAM policy edits at org or project level with `gcloud organizations get-iam-policy` and `gcloud projects set-iam-policy`, then log sinks into BigQuery, Cloud Storage and Pub/Sub. Each sink section shows how to pull the `writerIdentity` and grant it the right role: `roles/bigquery.dataEditor` on the dataset, `objectCreator` on the bucket, `roles/pubsub.publisher` on the topic. Skip that step and the sink exists but ships nothing.

Ready-made queries are included for Cloud Logging Explorer — IAM policy changes, resource deletions, Cloud Storage object reads, failed authorization. For long-term retention there are SQL queries against the exported BigQuery tables. You need `gcloud`, `bq` and `gsutil` with org-level permissions.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill gcp-audit-logs -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/gcp-audit-logs/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/gcp-audit-logs/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill gcp-audit-logs -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/gcp-audit-logs/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill gcp-audit-logs -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/gcp-audit-logs/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills gcp-audit-logs
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/gcp-audit-logs/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill gcp-audit-logs -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path compliance/auditing/gcp-audit-logs
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/gcp-audit-logs/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill gcp-audit-logs -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/compliance/auditing/gcp-audit-logs/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- enable data access audit logs across every project in an org
- export audit logs to BigQuery for long-term retention
- stream audit events to a SIEM through Pub/Sub
- find IAM policy changes from the past week
- triage failed authorization attempts in a project

## Example prompts
- enable data access logs for Cloud Storage and BigQuery in my project
- create a BigQuery log sink and grant it access to the dataset
- show me every resource deletion in the last 7 days

# GCP Audit Logs

Audit GCP activity with Cloud Audit Logs for compliance, security investigation, and operational monitoring.

## When to Use

- Enabling organization-wide audit logging across GCP projects
- Meeting compliance requirements for SOC 2, HIPAA, PCI DSS, or FedRAMP
- Investigating unauthorized access or suspicious API activity
- Setting up alerting on administrative and data access events
- Exporting logs to BigQuery for long-term analysis and reporting

## Audit Log Types

```yaml
log_types:
  admin_activity:
    description: API calls that modify resource configuration or metadata
    enabled: Always (cannot be disabled)
    retention: 400 days (default)
    cost: No charge
    examples:
      - Creating or deleting VM instances
      - Changing IAM policies
      - Modifying firewall rules
  data_access:
    description: API calls that read resource configuration, metadata, or user data
    enabled: Must be explicitly enabled (except BigQuery)
    retention: 30 days (default)
    cost: Can be significant at high volume
    subtypes:
      ADMIN_READ: Read resource configuration/metadata
      DATA_READ: Read user-provided data
      DATA_WRITE: Write user-provided data
  system_event:
    description: Actions performed by GCP systems on behalf of resources
    enabled: Always (cannot be disabled)
    retention: 400 days (default)
    cost: No charge
    examples:
      - Live migration of VM instances
      - Automatic scaling events
  policy_denied:
    description: Actions denied by VPC Service Controls or organization policies
    enabled: Always (cannot be disabled)
    retention: 400 days (default)
    cost: No charge
```

## Enable Data Access Logs for an Organization

```bash
# Get current org IAM policy
gcloud organizations get-iam-policy ORG_ID --format=json > org-policy.json
# Add audit config to org-policy.json:
# {
#   "auditConfigs": [
#     {
#       "service": "allServices",
#       "auditLogConfigs": [
#         {"logType": "ADMIN_READ"},
#         {"logType": "DATA_READ"},
#         {"logType": "DATA_WRITE"}
#       ]
#     }
#   ],
#   ...existing bindings...
# }
# Apply the updated policy
