## What it does

This skill tells the agent how to invoke GCC on C and C++ projects: which optimisation level to pick, which warnings to turn on, how to set up LTO and PGO, and what to do about common errors. There is a build-mode table, from `-g -O0 -Wall -Wextra` for debugging up to `-Os -DNDEBUG` when binary size matters. It also insists you pass the standard explicitly, `-std=c11` or `-std=c++17`, instead of trusting the implicit default. That one matters: mixed `-std=` across translation units is a known source of ABI trouble.

Error triage covers `undefined reference`, `multiple definition`, implicit function declarations, incompatible pointer types and `relocation truncated`, each with a likely cause and a fix. Link-order advice is there too — put `-l` flags after the object files. Handy one-liners include `gcc -Q --help=optimizers -O2 | grep enabled` and assembly output via `-S -masm=intel`.

LTO needs `-flto` at both compile and link time, and `gcc-ar` instead of `ar` when you archive LTO objects. PGO runs in three steps: `-fprofile-generate`, a run on a representative workload, then `-fprofile-use`. Profiles from multithreaded runs can come out inconsistent, so `-fprofile-correction` is mentioned. The skill assumes GNU Make, CMake or a shell script, but ships no build recipes of its own — flags only.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill gcc -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/gcc/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/gcc/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill gcc -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/gcc/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill gcc -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/gcc/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills gcc
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/gcc/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill gcc -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --path skills/compilers/gcc
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/gcc/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill gcc -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/compilers/gcc/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick release flags without losing throughput
- turn on LTO and remember `-flto` at link time
- build an instrumented binary with `-fsanitize=address,undefined`
- debug `undefined reference` and fix `-l` flag order
- silence one warning in a narrow scope with `#pragma GCC diagnostic`

## Example prompts
- Build the project in release with LTO and show me the flags
- Why does linking fail with undefined reference to `foo`?
- Set up PGO: instrument, run the workload, rebuild with the profile

description: GCC compiler skill for C/C++ projects. Use when selecting optimization levels, warning flags, debug builds, LTO, sanitizer instrumentation, or diagnosing compilation errors with GCC. Covers flag selection for debug vs release, ABI concerns, preprocessor macros, profile-guided optimization, and integration with build systems. Activates on queries about gcc flags, compilation errors, performance tuning, warning suppression, or cross-standard compilation.

# GCC

## Purpose

Guide agents through GCC invocation: flag selection, build modes, warning triage, PGO, LTO, and common error patterns. Assume the project uses GNU Make, CMake, or a shell script.

## Triggers

- "What flags should I use for a release build?"
- "GCC is giving me a warning/error I don't understand"
- "How do I enable LTO / PGO with GCC?"
- "How do I compile with `-fsanitize`?"
- "My binary is too large / too slow"
- Undefined reference errors, ABI mismatch, missing symbols

## Workflow

### 1. Choose a build mode

| Goal | Recommended flags |
|------|-------------------|
| Debug | `-g -O0 -Wall -Wextra` |
| Debug + debuggable optimisation | `-g -Og -Wall -Wextra` |
| Release | `-O2 -DNDEBUG -Wall` |
| Release (max perf, native only) | `-O3 -march=native -DNDEBUG` |
| Release (min size) | `-Os -DNDEBUG` |
| Sanitizer (dev) | `-g -O1 -fsanitize=address,undefined` |

Always pass `-std=c11` / `-std=c++17` (or the required standard) explicitly. Never rely on the implicit default.

### 2. Warning discipline

Start with `-Wall -Wextra`. For stricter standards compliance add `-Wpedantic`. To treat all warnings as errors in CI: `-Werror`.

Suppress a specific warning only in a narrow scope:

```c
#pragma GCC diagnostic push
#pragma GCC diagnostic ignored "-Wunused-parameter"
// ...
#pragma GCC diagnostic pop
```

Do not pass `-w` (silences everything) except as a last resort for third-party headers.

### 3. Debug information

- `-g` — DWARF debug info, default level 2
- `-g3` — includes macro definitions (useful with GDB `macro expand`)
- `-ggdb` — DWARF extensions optimal for GDB
- `-gsplit-dwarf` — splits `.dwo` files; reduces link time, needed for `debuginfod`

Pair `-g` with `-Og` (not `-O0`) when you need readable optimised code in GDB.

### 4. Optimisation decision tree

```text
Need max throughput on a fixed machine?
  yes -> -O3 -march=native -flto
  no  -> profiling available?
           yes -> -O2 -fprofile-use
           no  -> -O2
