# brainstorming

A skill for Claude and other agents that turns a rough idea into an approved spec and blocks implementation until the design is signed off.

## What it does

The skill activates on ambiguous or high-complexity work: a new feature, product behavior, UI or component design, an architecture choice, a contract change. The agent reads project context and authority docs first, looks for existing patterns, then asks clarifying questions one at a time, preferring multiple choice. Next come 2-3 approaches with trade-offs and a recommendation, then design sections presented one by one for approval.

There are two modes. Normal brainstorming walks you to a spec: draft, self-review, user review, handoff to planning. Grilling Mode starts on direct phrases like `grill me` or `盘问我`; it suspends the checklist and all document requirements and just pressure-tests the idea until you call it off. It closes with a `Challenge Result` listing survived and rejected assumptions.

The hard gate is the point: no code, no scaffolding, no implementation skills until the design or spec is approved. Small stuff — a wording change, a single-owner bug fix — stays on the fast path with no ceremony. If `~/.config/aegis/config.toml` sets `activation_mode = "explicit"`, the skill only runs when you name Aegis or the skill itself.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add GanyuanRan/Aegis --skill brainstorming -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/brainstorming/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/brainstorming/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add GanyuanRan/Aegis --skill brainstorming -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/brainstorming/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add GanyuanRan/Aegis --skill brainstorming -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/brainstorming/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install GanyuanRan/Aegis brainstorming
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/brainstorming/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add GanyuanRan/Aegis --skill brainstorming -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/GanyuanRan/Aegis --path skills/brainstorming
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/brainstorming/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add GanyuanRan/Aegis --skill brainstorming -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/GanyuanRan/Aegis/tree/HEAD/skills/brainstorming/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- turn a vague feature idea into a spec you can build from
- pick an architecture from several options with the trade-offs stated
- find holes in a plan before anyone starts coding
- settle public API contracts and compatibility boundaries
- separate real business constraints from current implementation limits

## Example prompts
- Help me design a notifications feature, don't write code yet
- grill this migration plan, don't just agree with me
- Compare approaches for changing the API contract and recommend one

<EXPLICIT-MODE-GATE>
If activation mode is explicit (`~/.config/aegis/config.toml` has
`activation_mode = "explicit"`, or `AEGIS_ACTIVATION_MODE=explicit` is visible
in the environment) and the current user request did not explicitly invoke
Aegis or this skill by name, exit back to the fast path: answer concisely
without this workflow's checklist, ceremony, or document requirements. If the
user explicitly named Aegis or this skill, proceed normally.

# Execute

→ Direct grilling or plan/design pressure-test? → Enter `Grilling Mode` below. Soft challenge intent? → Use its one-line mode confirmation. Do not start normal design artifacts, document writing, task planning, or implementation during the interview.
→ New feature, product behavior, UI/component design, architecture/contract change, or ambiguous medium/high-complexity work? → **Design first. No implementation until the needed design/spec is approved.**
  1. Explore project context → read authority docs, check for existing patterns
  2. Ask clarifying questions one at a time (prefer multiple choice)
  3. Propose 2-3 approaches with trade-offs and your recommendation
  4. Present design sections → get user approval after each
  5. Write spec → self-review → user review → transition to writing-plans
→ HARD GATE: For tasks that match this skill, do NOT write code, scaffold projects, or invoke implementation skills until design/spec approval is satisfied.

## Route Fixtures

These rows are calibration expectations for method behavior, not a runtime
regex router. The Agent selects the route from evidence; route selection is
not a user question.

| Scenario | Route |
| --- | --- |
| 想法还没想清楚，先梳理功能设计 | normal brainstorming, compact output first |
| 讨论公共 API 契约和兼容边界 | normal brainstorming, design sections before implementation |
| 盘问/拷问/审问这个方案，不要顺着我 | `Grilling Mode` |
| 修复登录按钮的空指针 | `systematic-debugging` |
| review 当前 PR / diff / 当前代码 | `requesting-code-review` |
| 给我一个有目标的方案 | `goal-framing` when goal intent is explicit; otherwise normal brainstorming |
| 把按钮文案从保存改成提交 | fast-path; no design ceremony |
