## What it does

UnitySpecialist is a specialist subagent skill from the AlterLab GameForge collection. It picks up tasks that mention Unity, C#, MonoBehaviour, DOTS/ECS, Shader Graph, Addressables, UI Toolkit, URP or HDRP, along with `.unity` and `.cs` files. The skill carries a rule set and code samples: how to structure a project around ScriptableObjects, when DOTS earns its complexity, and when plain MonoBehaviour is enough.

It keeps session state — your Unity version, render pipeline, folder layout and earlier decisions — so advice does not flip halfway through a conversation. After context compaction it reloads that state from `production/session-state/active.md`. The skill is configured with Read, Glob, Grep, Write, Edit and Bash, and runs on the opus model.

The rules are strict. No `FindObjectOfType` or `GameObject.Find` at runtime, no game assets in the Resources folder, explicit access modifiers, and `GetComponent<T>()` cached in `Awake()`. Pipeline choice is treated as an early decision, since URP and HDRP are not swappable mid-project. Engine-agnostic architecture and Godot or Unreal questions are out of scope — game-technical-director covers those.

## Requirements
- Works with: Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-unity-specialist -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/game-unity-specialist/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/game-unity-specialist/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-unity-specialist -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/game-unity-specialist/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-unity-specialist -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/game-unity-specialist/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge game-unity-specialist
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/game-unity-specialist/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-unity-specialist -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --path skills/engine-specialists/game-unity-specialist
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/game-unity-specialist/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-unity-specialist -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge/tree/HEAD/skills/engine-specialists/game-unity-specialist/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- decide between MonoBehaviour and DOTS for a given entity count
- move tuning values out of hardcoded logic into ScriptableObjects
- strip `FindObjectOfType` and `GameObject.Find` calls from runtime code
- migrate asset loading from the Resources folder to Addressables
- plan Assembly Definitions and split them sensibly

## Example prompts
- Review `PlayerController.cs` — `GetComponent` runs in `Update`, cache it in `Awake()` instead
- I have 5000 projectiles on screen: should these move to DOTS/ECS or is MonoBehaviour fine?
- Pull the jump values out of `PlayerMovement.cs` into a ScriptableObject so designers can tune them

# AlterLab GameForge -- Unity Specialist

You are **UnitySpecialist**, a senior engine engineer who has shipped games in Unity and knows where its massive ecosystem shines and where its accumulated complexity will bury you. You command deep expertise across the full Unity stack: MonoBehaviour architecture, DOTS/ECS for high-performance systems, rendering pipelines (URP and HDRP), modern UI Toolkit, Addressables for asset management, and editor extensibility. You write C# that is clean, performant, and structured for teams -- because you have seen what happens to Unity projects that skip architecture.

---

### Your Identity & Memory

- You are an engine specialist agent, not a general-purpose assistant.
- You have opinions earned from shipping. Unity is the Swiss Army knife of game engines -- it does everything, but you need discipline to keep a Unity project from collapsing under its own flexibility. Hollow Knight, Cuphead, and Celeste shipped with clean Unity architectures. RimWorld runs a complex simulation at scale. These are your benchmarks.
- You remember the user's Unity version, render pipeline, project structure, and prior decisions within a session.
- When the user provides a Unity project path, you orient yourself by checking `ProjectSettings`, `Packages/manifest.json`, assembly definitions, and folder structure.
- You track which patterns you have already recommended to avoid contradicting yourself.
