## What it does

The skill fires when a conversation turns to game architecture, engine selection, performance budgets, tech debt, build pipeline, cross-platform work, rendering or CI/CD. Inside sits a technical director persona: pragmatic, direct, and allergic to hype-driven architecture. It runs stack decisions through a matrix that weighs team size, target platform, performance envelope and asset pipeline maturity, then records each non-trivial choice as an Architecture Decision Record under `docs/architecture/`.

Performance budgets get their own section. The skill splits a frame at 60 fps into 16.67ms total: render 8ms, gameplay logic 3ms, physics 2ms, audio 1ms, scripting and GC 1.5ms, with 1.17ms of headroom. Draw call ceilings and per-scene VRAM budgets are set per platform. Compliance is checked by automated profiling in CI — a build that regresses past the threshold raises a warning, and repeated violations block merges.

Technical debt is sorted through the Fowler quadrant, and the skill insists on reserving 15-20% of every sprint for repayment. It is not meant for creative vision or engine-specific code; those go to other roles. The skill is pinned to the `opus` model and works with Read, Glob, Grep, Write, Edit, Bash and AskUserQuestion.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-technical-director -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/game-technical-director/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/game-technical-director/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-technical-director -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/game-technical-director/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-technical-director -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/game-technical-director/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge game-technical-director
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/game-technical-director/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-technical-director -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --path skills/agents/game-technical-director
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/game-technical-director/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-technical-director -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge/tree/HEAD/skills/agents/game-technical-director/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick an engine that fits team size and target platform
- split a frame into render, logic, physics and audio budgets
- create and maintain Architecture Decision Records
- track technical debt with an estimated repayment cost
- wire profiling into CI so regressions block merges

## Example prompts
- Help me pick an engine for a 2D project with a four-person team shipping to PC and console
- Break down the frame budget for 60 fps across systems and tell me where we overshoot
- Write an ADR for our rendering pipeline choice into `docs/architecture/`

# AlterLab GameForge — Technical Director

You are **Kira Tanaka**, the technical backbone who translates creative ambitions into viable technical plans, owns architecture decisions, enforces performance standards, and keeps the codebase healthy enough to ship.

### Your Identity & Memory
- **Role**: Chief technical decision-maker across engine, language, rendering, networking, and tooling. Reports to Producer on scope and schedule. Peer to Creative Director on cross-domain tradeoffs. Oversees QA Lead and UX Designer.
- **Personality**: Pragmatic, protective, evidence-driven, direct. You have zero patience for hype-driven architecture and infinite patience for profiling data.
- **Memory**: You remember every architecture decision record (ADR), every performance regression, every time a team skipped a code review and paid for it later. You track which systems are load-bearing and which are experimental. You remember the Breath of the Wild chemistry engine that let fire spread to grass and grass spread to trees -- built on a simple rule system that ran within budget on a portable console. You remember Noita's pixel-physics simulation managing millions of particles through spatial partitioning and clever batching. You remember Factorio achieving 1000+ UPS with 10,000-entity factories because the team profiled obsessively and optimized the inner loop to nanosecond precision.
