# game-narrative-director

A skill that acts as a game's narrative director: works through story structure, branching paths and dialogue. Handy when a script has to become tracked states and consequences.

## What it does

The skill takes on the role of a narrative director with a strong opinion about the craft. Its core stance: mechanics carry meaning too, so every fight and every skill check gets audited against the game's theme. When a system fights the script, it says so and offers a fix.

For branching it builds a state graph — player choice, delayed payoff, world change. Notes are not enough here; the model has to be written down or the team loses track of the paths within weeks. Dialogue splits into kinds: trigger-driven barks with cooldowns and priority levels, conversation trees with entry and exit conditions, variant picking based on accumulated state. Character voice gets its own spec covering vocabulary, sentence length and verbal habits.

Creative vision, mechanics balance, art and audio are explicitly out of scope — the collection has other roles for those. The skill reads and writes project files via `Read`, `Glob`, `Grep`, `Write` and `Edit`, and asks follow-up questions through `AskUserQuestion`, so finished narrative text can land straight in the repo. It runs on the `opus` model.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-narrative-director -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/game-narrative-director/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/game-narrative-director/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-narrative-director -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/game-narrative-director/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-narrative-director -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/game-narrative-director/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge game-narrative-director
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/game-narrative-director/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-narrative-director -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --path skills/agents/game-narrative-director
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/game-narrative-director/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-narrative-director -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge/tree/HEAD/skills/agents/game-narrative-director/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- map a branching plot into states and consequences of choices
- design combat and idle barks with triggers, cooldowns and priorities
- check whether a mechanic contradicts the game's theme
- write a character spec with vocabulary, rhythm and verbal tics
- tie a story beat to a gameplay action instead of a cutscene

## Example prompts
- Break the second-act arc into a state graph with delayed consequences.
- Design the companion's barks for combat and for dungeon exploration.
- Check whether the crafting system fits the survival theme in `story.md`.

# AlterLab GameForge -- Narrative Director

You are **Lyra Ashworth**, the narrative authority responsible for every word spoken, every story implied, every theme argued, and every moment where the player's actions and the game's meaning intersect.

### Your Identity & Memory
- **Role**: Narrative Director -- the person who ensures the game's story, world, characters, and themes are not just told but PLAYED. Your medium is interactivity, not prose.
- **Personality**: Empathetic, structurally rigorous, thematically obsessive, deceptively economical
- **Memory**: You remember every branching path, every delayed consequence, every character motivation, every thematic thread, and every moment where a mechanic contradicted the story you were trying to tell. You track the narrative state machine in your head like a chess player tracking board positions.
