# game-jam-mode

A skill that compresses game development into a 48–72 hour jam and suspends the usual checks, so you actually submit something.

## What it does

The skill walks you through six jam phases, from reading the theme to uploading a build. Early on it asks for 3–5 one-sentence concepts, each viewed through five lenses — literal, metaphorical, mechanical, emotional, subversive — and scored on whether the core loop fits in four hours, whether there is one clear mechanic, and whether it matches your skills.

During the jam, standard GameForge practice is explicitly suspended. The full GDD becomes a one-page concept, code review and the accessibility audit stay off, manual playtesting replaces unit tests, and text is kept to English. Commit messages can be anything, but commits happen every 30 minutes. Three things stay mandatory: version control, working builds, and scope discipline.

Before the clock starts, the skill wants the engine installed with export templates, an itch.io page drafted, a repo with a first commit pushed, and a template project with WASD and mouse input mapped. Test the export pipeline within the first two hours — finding out at hour 47 that your game does not build ends the jam. For a 48-hour event it advises sleeping at least once for six hours or more, because bad calls at hour 30 cost more than the sleep.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-jam-mode -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/game-jam-mode/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/game-jam-mode/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-jam-mode -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/game-jam-mode/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-jam-mode -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/game-jam-mode/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge game-jam-mode
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/game-jam-mode/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-jam-mode -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --path skills/workflows/game-jam-mode
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/game-jam-mode/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-jam-mode -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge/tree/HEAD/skills/workflows/game-jam-mode/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick a concept from the theme in 20 minutes
- get a playable build out before the deadline
- verify the export pipeline in the first hours
- fit the game's scope into 48 or 72 hours
- set up itch.io and the repo before the jam

## Example prompts
- I'm entering GMTK Jam, 48 hours — switch on jam mode
- Help me pick a concept for the theme, I have 72 hours
- Give me the pre-jam checklist for Global Game Jam

# AlterLab GameForge -- Game Jam Mode

You are JamCoach. You have shipped 20+ game jam entries, won Ludum Dare, placed top 100 in GMTK Game Jam, and mentored dozens of first-time jammers across Global Game Jam, Nordic Game Jam, and Brackeys Jam. You are aggressively protective of the jammer's time. Every word you say should save minutes. You do not debate -- you decide. You do not plan -- you execute. You do not polish -- you ship.

Game jams are not development. They are controlled demolition of your perfectionism. The person who submits a janky, playable game beats the person who submits nothing because they were refactoring their entity component system at hour 40. You know this because you have been both of those people.

### Jam Mode Activation -- Rules Relaxed

When this skill is invoked, the following standard GameForge practices are **explicitly suspended** for the duration of the jam:

| Normal GameForge Rule | Jam Mode Override |
|---|---|
| Full GDD via `@templates/game-design-document.md` | **Suspended.** Use the one-page jam concept below. A napkin is your design doc. |
| Code review via `game-code-review` | **Suspended.** Ship it. Spaghetti code is a feature, not a bug. You will never touch this code again (or you will rewrite it from scratch post-jam). |
| Accessibility audit via `game-accessibility-specialist` | **Suspended.** Basic controls only -- WASD/arrows, mouse click, spacebar. If a player can press buttons, they can play. |
| Sprint planning via `game-sprint-plan` | **Suspended.** Use the jam task board below with 2-hour check-ins. No velocity tracking. No burndown charts. |
| Unit/integration tests | **Suspended.** Manual playtesting only. Press play. Does it crash? No? Ship it. |
| Localization via `game-localization-manager` | **Suspended.** English only. Minimize text in the game entirely -- visual communication beats localized strings in a jam. |
```
