# game-balance-check

A skill that checks game balance: currency flows, progression curves and reward pacing. Runs Monte Carlo simulation when there is no telemetry to lean on.

## What it does

The skill picks up work on economy validation, progression curves, difficulty scaling and reward pacing. It starts by listing what the system holds: currencies, sources and sinks, growth tracks, difficulty variables, reward mechanisms. Then it maps how those connect, so a change to one number shows which other systems move with it.

Economy validation comes next: flow rates per source and sink, net accumulation, earn rates split by player archetype. Where telemetry is missing, the skill generates synthetic data through Monte Carlo runs and checks the spread statistically. Its frontmatter allows `Read`, `Glob`, `Grep`, `Write` and `AskUserQuestion`, and the argument is `[system to analyze]`.

Economy and monetization design belong to `game-economy-designer` in the same collection, and code review to `game-code-review`. On a prototype whose systems are still undefined there is nothing to tune yet; run `game-prototype` first. Tweaking numbers will not fix a system that is broken by design.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-balance-check -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/game-balance-check/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/game-balance-check/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-balance-check -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/game-balance-check/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-balance-check -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/game-balance-check/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge game-balance-check
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/game-balance-check/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-balance-check -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --path skills/workflows/game-balance-check
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/game-balance-check/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-balance-check -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- work out net currency accumulation and where inflation comes from
- spot a dominant strategy that makes every other option pointless
- smooth a progression curve full of dead zones and spikes
- calibrate difficulty so players neither breeze through nor hit a wall
- check reward pacing through the mid-game and endgame

## Example prompts
- Check the balance of this economy: here are the gold sources and sinks, find the imbalance.
- Run a Monte Carlo pass over the level progression curve and show where players stall.
- Analyze reward pacing in the midgame; the system is in `docs/loot.md`.

# AlterLab GameForge -- Economy & System Balance Validation

Balance is not about making everything equal -- it is about making everything feel fair while keeping decisions meaningful. A perfectly balanced game where every option is identical is a game with no interesting decisions. Into the Breach achieves near-perfect balance not through symmetry but through information transparency -- every option is viable because every consequence is visible. Slay the Spire achieves it through controlled variance -- any card can be powerful in the right deck, and Jorbs' statistical breakdowns prove the math holds across thousands of runs.

The goal is controlled asymmetry: every choice has a trade-off, every path is viable, and every player feels their preferred playstyle is respected. This workflow provides formal models -- including statistical validation and simulation -- for validating economy, progression, difficulty, and reward systems.

### Purpose & Triggers

**Invoke this workflow when:**
- An in-game economy is producing unintended inflation or deflation
- Players are gravitating toward a single dominant strategy and ignoring all alternatives
- Progression feels too fast (trivializing content), too slow (creating grind walls), or uneven (dead zones followed by spikes)
- Difficulty scaling needs calibration -- either players are breezing through or hitting walls
- Reward pacing needs analysis to sustain engagement through the mid-game and endgame
- A new item, character, ability, or system is being introduced and needs integration with existing balance
- Free-to-play monetization fairness needs auditing -- the gap between paying and non-paying players must be reasonable
- Pre-release balance pass is needed before a playtest or launch
