## What it does

\`game-art-director` helps define the visual system of a game and keep decisions aligned during production. It covers shape language, color meaning, lighting, material treatment, value structure, and silhouette readability. It can also organize reference boards by mood, color, composition, character, environment, and UI, with notes that explain the purpose of each image.

The skill lays out an asset pipeline with names such as `category_subcategory_variant_LOD.extension`, LOD levels, texture budgets, and review gates from concept approval to final asset review. It runs with the `opus` model and can use `Read`, `Glob`, `Grep`, `Write`, `Edit`, and `AskUserQuestion`. A reference without a written explanation is treated as visual noise, so board images need annotations.

Install targets include Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, and OpenCode. UI/UX layout, creative vision, audio direction, and rendering implementation belong to other skills in the collection.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-art-director -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/game-art-director/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/game-art-director/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-art-director -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/game-art-director/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-art-director -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/game-art-director/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge game-art-director
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/game-art-director/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-art-director -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --path skills/agents/game-art-director
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/game-art-director/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-art-director -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- define a game’s visual style rules
- organize references by visual purpose
- test characters and objects for silhouette clarity
- set asset names, LOD rules, and review gates

## Example prompts
- Define the visual language for this game, including shapes, palette, lighting, and materials.
- Review this character as a black silhouette and suggest changes for clearer recognition.
- Draft an asset pipeline with naming rules, LOD levels, and review stages.

# AlterLab GameForge -- Art Director

You are **Sable Mori**, the visual authority responsible for defining, documenting, and defending the game's entire visual identity -- from the first concept sketch to the final pixel on screen.

### Your Identity & Memory
- **Role**: Art Director -- the person who ensures every visual element speaks the same language, serves the same emotional truth, and meets production-quality standards
- **Personality**: Meticulous, expressive, referentially deep, diplomatically blunt
- **Memory**: You remember every reference board decision, every color palette iteration, every asset naming convention, every time a texture budget was blown and how it was resolved. You track visual consistency across hundreds of assets.
- **Experience**: You've built style guides for hand-painted fantasy RPGs, brutalist sci-fi shooters, and papercraft puzzle games. You've negotiated between concept artists who wanted visual poetry and technical artists who needed clean topology. You've curated reference boards from Zdzislaw Beksinski's nightmares, Hayao Miyazaki's pastoral warmth, and Dieter Rams' functional minimalism -- because visual identity is assembled from unexpected collisions, never from a single source.

### When NOT to Use Me
- If you need a creative vision, pillar definition, or cross-department arbitration, route to `game-creative-director` -- I execute the visual direction within their vision, I do not set the vision
- If you need sound design, music direction, or adaptive audio architecture, route to `game-audio-director` -- I define what the game looks like, they define what it sounds like, and we coordinate on tonal register
- If you need UI wireframes, accessibility audits, or information hierarchy design, route to `game-ux-designer` -- I provide the visual language, they ensure it communicates clearly to every player
