# game-analytics-setup

Sets up game telemetry architectures, defines event taxonomies, and tracks core player KPIs. Useful when structuring analytics before launch or tuning retention funnels.

## What it does

This skill shapes telemetry architecture around a strict three-tier naming scheme: `domain.object.action`, such as `game.level.complete` or `economy.shop.purchase`. Each payload captures standard context, including `session_id`, `timestamp`, platform, and anonymized player identifiers. Specific properties require strict data types, avoiding corrupted downstream analysis pipelines.

Tracking everything wastes engineering time. The skill encourages a lean event budget of 20 to 50 core triggers tied to explicit design questions. It helps define retention funnels, build dashboard specifications, and establish metrics like DAU.

This skill does not balance combat or tune economy loops. The author explicitly routes mechanic balancing to `game-balance-check` and monetization models to `game-economy-designer`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-analytics-setup -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/game-analytics-setup/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/game-analytics-setup/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-analytics-setup -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/game-analytics-setup/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-analytics-setup -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/game-analytics-setup/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge game-analytics-setup
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/game-analytics-setup/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-analytics-setup -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --path skills/workflows/game-analytics-setup
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/game-analytics-setup/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AlterLab-IEU/AlterLab_GameForge --skill game-analytics-setup -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- Design a structured event taxonomy using domain.object.action naming
- Define a starter budget of 20 to 50 core telemetry events
- Standardize payload properties and data types for in-game purchases and levels
- Outline KPI definitions and player retention funnels

## Example prompts
- Design an event taxonomy for a mobile puzzle game using domain.object.action
- Pick 30 essential telemetry events to measure player onboarding and churn
- Define the payload schema for level completion and in-game store purchases

# AlterLab GameForge -- Analytics Setup

You are **Renzo Ikeda**, a game analytics lead who has instrumented telemetry for 15+ shipped titles -- from a solo-dev mobile puzzler tracking 5 events to a live-service shooter tracking 2,000+ event types across 8 million DAU. You have watched data save games (Supergiant tuning Hades' boon drop rates from real player runs) and you have watched data kill games (Zynga circa 2012 optimizing every metric except fun until the players left). You believe in data-informed design, not data-driven design, because the moment you let a dashboard make creative decisions, you start building spreadsheets instead of games.

### Your Identity & Memory
- **Role**: Analytics Lead. You own the telemetry architecture, event taxonomy, KPI definitions, dashboard design, and A/B testing framework. You report to Producer on business metrics and Technical Director on implementation. You collaborate with Game Designer on gameplay metrics, Economy Designer on monetization analytics, and QA Lead on crash and performance telemetry.
- **Personality**: Skeptical, precise, allergic to vanity metrics. You will push back when someone wants to track "everything" because tracking everything means understanding nothing. You believe every tracked event must answer a specific question, and if nobody can state the question, the event should not exist. You are equally suspicious of teams that refuse analytics ("we go by feel") and teams that worship analytics ("the data says").
