## What it does

The skill structures research initiation from vague brainstorms into concrete hypotheses. It applies the 5W1H framework (What, Why, Who, When, Where, How) to pin down scope and stakeholder context. Academic literature searches target papers from the last 3 years across arXiv and Google Scholar, spotting literature, methodological, and application gaps.

Artifacts emerge through strict readiness gates. Every session generates `research-question-card.md` to define falsification criteria and immediate next steps. If sufficient evidence exists, it compiles `literature-review.md` and `references.bib`. A full `research-proposal.md` is produced only after the evidence gate confirms sources go beyond abstract summaries.

Zotero integration depends on a configured, writable Zotero MCP server. Without that server in place, automated DOI imports, collection trees, and PDF attachments via Unpaywall will fail to trigger.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Galaxy-Dawn/claude-scholar --skill research-ideation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/research-ideation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/research-ideation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Galaxy-Dawn/claude-scholar --skill research-ideation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/research-ideation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Galaxy-Dawn/claude-scholar --skill research-ideation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/research-ideation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Galaxy-Dawn/claude-scholar research-ideation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/research-ideation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Galaxy-Dawn/claude-scholar --skill research-ideation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Galaxy-Dawn/claude-scholar --path skills/research-ideation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/research-ideation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Galaxy-Dawn/claude-scholar --skill research-ideation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Galaxy-Dawn/claude-scholar/tree/HEAD/skills/research-ideation/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- brainstorm research topics using the 5W1H framework
- spot methodological and literature gaps in recent publications
- produce a structured Research Question Card with falsification criteria
- compile literature reviews and BibTeX citations from evidence records
- import discovered DOIs and open-access PDFs into Zotero collections

## Example prompts
- Brainstorm research ideas on multi-agent consensus using the 5W1H framework
- Conduct a gap analysis on recent arXiv papers and draft research-question-card.md
- Start a research project and review the literature for diffusion model evaluation

# Research Ideation

Supports the complete workflow for the research project initiation phase, from vague idea to a traceable research contract: research question, hypothesis, evidence needs, falsification criteria, method selection, and next action.

## Core Features

### 1. Idea Brainstorming (5W1H Framework)

Systematically brainstorm research ideas using the 5W1H framework:
- **What**: What problem or phenomenon to study
- **Why**: Why this problem is important
- **Who**: Target audience and stakeholders
- **When**: Time scope and context of the research
- **Where**: Application scenarios and domains
- **How**: Preliminary research methodology ideas

**Integration with superpowers:brainstorming**: Can invoke the superpowers:brainstorming skill for interactive brainstorming to help rapidly generate and evaluate research ideas.

### 2. Literature Review

Systematically search, analyze, and synthesize related literature:
- Build effective search keywords
- Search via WebSearch across academic databases (arXiv, Google Scholar, etc.)
- Screen and evaluate paper quality
- Identify research trends and gaps
- Generate structured literature reviews from evidence-labeled sources
- **Zotero Integration**: Papers are automatically added to Zotero via DOI, organized into topic-based collections, and open-access PDFs are auto-attached for full-text reading

### 3. Gap Analysis

Systematically identify and evaluate research gaps:
- **Literature gaps**: Identify topics or questions not yet sufficiently studied
- **Methodological gaps**: Discover limitations and improvement opportunities in existing methods
- **Application gaps**: Identify opportunities for theory-to-practice transfer
- **Interdisciplinary gaps**: Discover research opportunities at the intersection of different fields
- **Temporal gaps**: Identify new research needs arising from changes over time

**Analysis Dimensions:**
- Coverage of research topics
- Comparison of strengths and weaknesses of existing methods
- Completeness of experimental setups
- Availability of datasets and benchmarks
- Gap between theory and practice

### 4. Research Question Definition
