## What it does

This skill defines version control conventions for collaborative development. It enforces Conventional Commits with types such as `feat`, `fix`, and `chore`. Subject lines must start with a verb, stay within 50 characters, and omit trailing periods. Branches follow a structured setup: permanent `master` and `develop` branches alongside temporary `feature/`, `bugfix/`, `hotfix/`, and `release/` branches. Direct pushes to `master` are blocked, requiring passing CI checks and code review approval.

Concrete workflows cover daily coding, release cuts, and hotfixes with version tags. The skill draws a firm line between merge and rebase. Feature branches sync against `develop` using `git rebase`, but merge back with `git merge --no-ff` to preserve branch history. Rebasing public branches is explicitly flagged as dangerous.

Step-by-step instructions also cover merge conflicts, including `--ours`, `--theirs`, and `--abort` options. If your team relies on trunk-based development without a separate `develop` branch, this skill will clash with your process because it strictly enforces a Git Flow model.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Galaxy-Dawn/claude-scholar --skill git-workflow -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/git-workflow/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/git-workflow/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Galaxy-Dawn/claude-scholar --skill git-workflow -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/git-workflow/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Galaxy-Dawn/claude-scholar --skill git-workflow -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/git-workflow/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Galaxy-Dawn/claude-scholar git-workflow
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/git-workflow/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Galaxy-Dawn/claude-scholar --skill git-workflow -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Galaxy-Dawn/claude-scholar --path skills/git-workflow
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/git-workflow/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Galaxy-Dawn/claude-scholar --skill git-workflow -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Galaxy-Dawn/claude-scholar/tree/HEAD/skills/git-workflow/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- Format commit messages according to Conventional Commits
- Standardize branch naming for features, bugfixes, and hotfixes
- Preserve branch history when merging with `--no-ff`
- Resolve merge conflicts using `--ours`, `--theirs`, or `--abort`

## Example prompts
- Create a Conventional Commit message for the newly added authentication middleware
- Show me the workflow to cut release v1.0.0 from develop into master
- Resolve the merge conflict in this file by keeping our current branch changes

# Git Workflow Standards

This document defines the project's Git usage standards, including commit message format, branch management strategy, workflows, merge strategies, and more. Following these standards improves collaboration efficiency, enables traceability, supports automation, and reduces conflicts.

## Commit Message Standards

The project follows the **Conventional Commits** specification:

```
<type>(<scope>): <subject>
<body>
<footer>
```

### Type Reference

| Type | Description | Example |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| `feat` | New feature | `feat(user): add user export functionality` |
| `fix` | Bug fix | `fix(login): fix captcha not refreshing` |
| `docs` | Documentation update | `docs(api): update API documentation` |
| `refactor` | Refactoring | `refactor(utils): refactor utility functions` |
| `perf` | Performance improvement | `perf(list): optimize list performance` |
| `test` | Test related | `test(user): add unit tests` |
| `chore` | Other changes | `chore: update dependency versions` |

### Subject Rules

- Start with a verb: add, fix, update, remove, optimize
- No more than 50 characters
- No period at the end

For more detailed conventions and examples, see `references/commit-conventions.md`.

## Branch Management Strategy

### Branch Types

| Branch Type | Naming Convention | Description | Lifecycle |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| master | `master` | Main branch, releasable state | Permanent |
| develop | `develop` | Development branch, latest integrated code | Permanent |
| feature | `feature/feature-name` | Feature branch | Delete after completion |
| bugfix | `bugfix/issue-description` | Bug fix branch | Delete after fix |
| hotfix | `hotfix/issue-description` | Emergency fix branch | Delete after fix |
| release | `release/version-number` | Release branch | Delete after release |

### Branch Naming Examples

```
feature/user-management          # User management feature
feature/123-add-export          # Issue-linked feature
bugfix/login-error              # Login error fix
hotfix/security-vulnerability   # Security vulnerability fix
release/v1.0.0                  # Version release
```

### Branch Protection Rules
