## What it does

The skill provides 55 rules across 11 categories for modern React Router applications. It moves data fetching out of components and directly into loaders. No `useEffect` data fetching allowed. Heavy routes execute queries concurrently via `Promise.all` and forward `request.signal` to cancel dead requests.

Security and middleware patterns validate route arguments using `zod`. Sessions live in `AsyncLocalStorage`, while `Sec-Fetch` header checks block cross-site mutations. Projects running older router releases without Single Fetch support will hit TypeScript errors on signatures like `Route.LoaderArgs`.

Database and API calls move into colocated `queries.server.ts` files. Per-request caching deduplicates repeated fetches without prop drilling.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sergiodxa/agent-skills --skill frontend-react-router-best-practices -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/frontend-react-router-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/frontend-react-router-best-practices/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sergiodxa/agent-skills --skill frontend-react-router-best-practices -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/frontend-react-router-best-practices/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sergiodxa/agent-skills --skill frontend-react-router-best-practices -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/frontend-react-router-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install sergiodxa/agent-skills frontend-react-router-best-practices
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/frontend-react-router-best-practices/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sergiodxa/agent-skills --skill frontend-react-router-best-practices -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/sergiodxa/agent-skills --path skills/frontend-react-router-best-practices
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/frontend-react-router-best-practices/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sergiodxa/agent-skills --skill frontend-react-router-best-practices -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/sergiodxa/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/frontend-react-router-best-practices/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- eliminate waterfall data fetching in React components
- run parallel queries in route loaders using `Promise.all`
- validate URL params early with `zod`
- abort cancelled background fetches via `request.signal`
- block cross-site form submissions with `Sec-Fetch` checks

## Example prompts
- Write a typed profile loader that validates the user ID param with zod and fetches data in parallel
- Add session and auth middleware to protect this route hierarchy
- Move all route data loading logic into a colocated queries.server.ts file

# React Router Best Practices

Performance optimization and architecture patterns for React Router applications. Contains 55 rules across 11 categories focused on data loading, actions, forms, streaming, and route organization.

## When to Apply

Reference these guidelines when:

- Writing new React Router routes (loaders, actions)
- Handling forms and mutations
- Implementing streaming with Single Fetch
- Organizing route files and colocating queries
- Setting up authentication patterns
- Adding SEO/meta tags

## Rules Summary

### Data Loading (CRITICAL)

#### loader-avoid-waterfalls - @rules/loader-avoid-waterfalls.md

All data fetching happens in loaders. Never fetch in components with useEffect.

```tsx
// BAD: fetching in component
function Profile() {
  const [user, setUser] = useState(null);
  useEffect(() => {
    fetch("/api/user")
      .then((r) => r.json())
      .then(setUser);
  }, []);
  if (!user) return <Spinner />;
  return <div>{user.name}</div>;
}
// GOOD: fetch in loader
export async function loader({ request }: Route.LoaderArgs) {
  let user = await getUser(request);
  return data({ user });
}
export default function Component() {
  const { user } = useLoaderData<typeof loader>();
  return <div>{user.name}</div>;
}
```

#### loader-parallel-fetch - @rules/loader-parallel-fetch.md

Use Promise.all for parallel data fetching in loaders.

```tsx
import { data } from "react-router";
// Bad: sequential fetches (slow)
export async function loader({ request }: Route.LoaderArgs) {
  let user = await getUser(request);
  let posts = await getPosts(user.id);
  let comments = await getComments(user.id);
  return data({ user, posts, comments });
}
// Good: parallel fetches
export async function loader({ request }: Route.LoaderArgs) {
  let user = await getUser(request);
  let [posts, comments] = await Promise.all([
    getPosts(user.id),
    getComments(user.id),
  ]);
  return data({ user, posts, comments });
}
```

#### loader-request-caching - @rules/loader-request-caching.md

API clients dedupe calls within the same request via context. Fetch in each loader that needs data.

```tsx
// Both loaders can call getUser - cached per request
