## What it does

The skill hands your agent a reference on React performance. It ships 33 rules grouped into 6 categories: bundle size, re-renders, rendering, component composition and common React pitfalls. The agent pulls the relevant rule when you write a new component, dig into slowdowns or clean up existing code.

Rules live in separate files such as `@rules/bundle-barrel-imports.md` and `@rules/rerender-memo.md`, each with bad and good examples. Importing icons straight from `lucide-react/dist/esm/icons/check` instead of a barrel file, lazy state init with a function in `useState`, moving heavy work into a `memo` component, `content-visibility: auto` for long lists.

Worth installing if your project is React and you keep hitting extra re-renders. One limit: these are performance rules, not app architecture, so they do not replace code review. The source text is cut off, so check the repository for the full category list.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sergiodxa/agent-skills --skill frontend-react-best-practices -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/frontend-react-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/frontend-react-best-practices/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sergiodxa/agent-skills --skill frontend-react-best-practices -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/frontend-react-best-practices/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sergiodxa/agent-skills --skill frontend-react-best-practices -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/frontend-react-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install sergiodxa/agent-skills frontend-react-best-practices
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/frontend-react-best-practices/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sergiodxa/agent-skills --skill frontend-react-best-practices -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/sergiodxa/agent-skills --path skills/frontend-react-best-practices
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/frontend-react-best-practices/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sergiodxa/agent-skills --skill frontend-react-best-practices -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- cut unnecessary re-renders in a component
- shrink the bundle with direct imports
- move expensive work into a memo component
- replace a useEffect with state derived during render
- set up lazy loading for a heavy module

## Example prompts
- check this component against frontend-react-best-practices
- refactor the list with memo and content-visibility
- why does this re-render so much — run the skill rules on it

# React Best Practices

Performance optimization and composition patterns for React components. Contains 33 rules across 6 categories focused on reducing re-renders, optimizing bundles, component composition, and avoiding common React pitfalls.

## When to Apply

Reference these guidelines when:

- Writing new React components
- Reviewing code for performance issues
- Refactoring existing React code
- Optimizing bundle size
- Working with hooks and state

## Rules Summary

### Bundle Size Optimization (CRITICAL)

#### bundle-barrel-imports - @rules/bundle-barrel-imports.md

Import directly from source, avoid barrel files.

```tsx
// Bad: loads entire library (200-800ms)
import { Check, X } from "lucide-react";
// Good: loads only what you need
import Check from "lucide-react/dist/esm/icons/check";
import X from "lucide-react/dist/esm/icons/x";
```

#### bundle-conditional - @rules/bundle-conditional.md

Load modules only when feature is activated.

```tsx
useEffect(() => {
  if (enabled && typeof window !== "undefined") {
    import("./heavy-module").then((mod) => setModule(mod));
  }
}, [enabled]);
```

#### bundle-preload - @rules/bundle-preload.md

Preload on hover/focus for perceived speed.

```tsx
<button
  onMouseEnter={() => import("./editor")}
  onFocus={() => import("./editor")}
  onClick={openEditor}
>
  Open Editor
</button>
```

### Re-render Optimization (MEDIUM)

#### rerender-functional-setstate - @rules/rerender-functional-setstate.md

Use functional setState for stable callbacks.

```tsx
// Bad: stale closure risk, recreates on items change
const addItem = useCallback(
  (item) => {
    setItems([...items, item]);
  },
  [items],
);
// Good: always uses latest state, stable reference
const addItem = useCallback((item) => {
  setItems((curr) => [...curr, item]);
}, []);
```

#### rerender-derived-state-no-effect - @rules/rerender-derived-state-no-effect.md

Derive state during render, not in effects.

```tsx
// Bad: extra state and effect, extra render
const [fullName, setFullName] = useState("");
useEffect(() => {
  setFullName(firstName + " " + lastName);
}, [firstName, lastName]);
// Good: derived directly during render
const fullName = firstName + " " + lastName;
```

#### rerender-lazy-state-init - @rules/rerender-lazy-state-init.md
