## What it does

The skill gives the agent a working frame for frontend tasks: components, design system, responsive layout, WCAG 2.1 accessibility and performance. Inside are ready TSX and CSS examples — a button with variants and sizes, a card, a form input with label, hint and error message. Every example leans on CSS custom properties such as `--space-2` and `--color-primary`, so the design tokens are baked into the patterns.

Accessibility is treated as a condition, not a checklist item: semantic HTML, keyboard navigation, focus management, colour contrast, a minimum touch target of 44px. Responsive work starts at a 320px viewport and enhances from there. Performance guidance covers lazy loading, critical CSS and tree shaking.

One thing to know before you install: the examples assume a token layer already exists. They reference `var(--color-surface)`, `var(--radius-md)` and similar variables, so the sample code will not render as-is in a project without those custom properties — you either define them or swap in your own. The skill is framework-agnostic, though the component examples are written in React.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jamesrochabrun/skills --skill frontend-designer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/frontend-designer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/frontend-designer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jamesrochabrun/skills --skill frontend-designer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/frontend-designer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jamesrochabrun/skills --skill frontend-designer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/frontend-designer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jamesrochabrun/skills frontend-designer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/frontend-designer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jamesrochabrun/skills --skill frontend-designer -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jamesrochabrun/skills --path skills/frontend-designer
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/frontend-designer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jamesrochabrun/skills --skill frontend-designer -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jamesrochabrun/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/frontend-designer/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a button with variants, sizes and a loading state
- set up design tokens as CSS custom properties
- make a form input with a hint and an error message screen readers pick up
- turn a mockup into a mobile-first responsive layout
- bring components up to WCAG 2.1 AA

## Example prompts
- Build a button component with primary, secondary and ghost variants following the frontend-designer pattern
- Create a card with elevated and outlined variants plus hover and focus states
- Audit my form for accessibility: labels, aria-describedby, error message

# Frontend Designer

A comprehensive skill for frontend designers and developers to build beautiful, accessible, and performant user interfaces with modern best practices.

## What This Skill Does

Helps frontend designers/developers with:
- **Component Design & Development** - Build reusable, accessible components
- **Design Systems** - Implement tokens, patterns, and documentation
- **Responsive Design** - Mobile-first, fluid layouts
- **Accessibility (WCAG 2.1)** - Inclusive design patterns
- **Modern CSS** - Flexbox, Grid, custom properties
- **Performance Optimization** - Fast, efficient frontends
- **Framework Patterns** - React, Vue, Svelte best practices
- **Design-to-Code** - Figma to production workflows

## Why This Skill Matters

**Without systematic approach:**
- Inconsistent component implementations
- Accessibility issues
- Poor responsive behavior
- Duplicate code and styles
- Hard to maintain
- Performance problems

**With this skill:**
- Consistent, reusable components
- WCAG AA compliant by default
- Mobile-first responsive design
- Design system aligned
- Maintainable codebase
- Fast, optimized delivery

## Core Principles

### 1. Accessibility First
- WCAG 2.1 AA minimum
- Semantic HTML
- Keyboard navigation
- Screen reader support
- Focus management
- Color contrast

### 2. Mobile-First Responsive
- Start with mobile (320px)
- Progressive enhancement
- Fluid typography
- Flexible layouts
- Touch-friendly targets

### 3. Performance by Default
- Minimal CSS/JS
- Lazy loading
- Optimized images
- Critical CSS
- Tree shaking

### 4. Component-Driven
- Atomic design methodology
- Reusable components
- Props-based customization
- Composition over inheritance

### 5. Design System Aligned
- Design tokens
- Consistent spacing
- Typography scale
- Color palette
- Component library

## Component Patterns

### Button Component

**Accessible, flexible button pattern:**

```tsx
// React example
interface ButtonProps {
  variant?: 'primary' | 'secondary' | 'ghost';
  size?: 'sm' | 'md' | 'lg';
  disabled?: boolean;
  loading?: boolean;
  children: React.ReactNode;
  onClick?: () => void;
}
export const Button: React.FC<ButtonProps> = ({
  variant = 'primary',
  size = 'md',
  disabled = false,
  loading = false,
  children,
  onClick,
  ...props
}) => {
  return (
    <button
